If not Cold Steel,Busse,Swamp,Scrap then?

Any of these 3 will fall into your friends budget. All 9" blades.

The Becker would be the least expensive and the bottom RD9 from Ranger although customized was still within the price range.

I just grab whichever one suits my mood when I need a big blade.

My suggestion would be grab a Becker and then with the leftover budget, snag a Leatherman Wave.

I would guess that an Army/Navy place would still have some Beckers and Trailmasters. SOG's seem popular in those places.

Rangers may take a little longer as the RD line is being revamped thus stocks are just starting to build with places like Sage Creek or thy Brigade Quartermasters. Heck, call Justin Gingrich himself and he may have one ready to send you. I've had them in in hand in about a week.

If he wants a bowie, there are plenty out there and readily available if brands aren't an issue.

is this h-s steel as in the photo of the g-sakai knife good for big knives? I have a seki rigid bowie about 20 years old that looks somewhat like this with what is called u2x steel with rg69, and the blade chipped on me when butchering a deer, so I had it reground yet have been afraid to use it since

I think SRS15 is relatively new steel it is Powder Metallurgy steel with pretty impressive composition:

C=1.5 Cr=13 W=1.25 Mo=2.75 V=1.5

And it holds edge very impressive also - I choped hard bush branches no chiping and it is not just chop them but make it easy and pleasant no matter how thick branch is and after first exesise with chopping it was able to shave. However I did not do any formal testing, but my impression after using it - it is best steel what I have.

Thanks, Vassili.
