If somebody said to you "I can't spend more than $50.00 on a knife" what would you recommend? I get asked for recommendations on "good" knives frequently, but most of what I suggest is out of the person's price range.

I'm not limiting this question to a specific type of knife, as I've has questions regarding everything from tradition slipjoints to "survival" knives. I only know of a couple of knives in this price range that I can recommend, but I'm curious about what y'all think about the selection in this price range.

Kershaw skyline(folder or fixed)
Kershaw RAM
Ontario RAT 1
Buck Vantage
Boker Hyper
Boker Exskelibur(around 50 I think)

There's a lot more, but I'm too tired to think too much right now. Lots of good knives to be had for at or below $50 though.

Becker BK11
Becker BK14
New Opinel
Svord Peasant
Mora

There are plenty of decent knives out there reasonably priced. These are but a few. I have 4 of the 5.

For OHO folders, I'd say Rat 1 or a used Delica. For something smaller/lighter/sheeple-friendly, Opinel.

Folders -
Buck 110
Vic. SAK Alox Farmer
Ontario RAT-1
Small Fixed -
Condor Bushlore or Nessmuk
Ka-Bar/Becker BK11
ESEE Izula
Large Fixed Blades -
Condor HudsonBay
Condor Speed Bowie
Condor Varan

Is the person you get this question from particular about where the knives are made? If so, that limits your options a bit. If not....there are lots. Spyderco Ambitious, Persistence, Tenacious, Resilience come to mind for cheaper folding knives as well as the Ontario RAT-1. For fixed blades, you could find a Buck 119 special for under $50 as well as the BK-11 and BK-14 which have already been mentioned. The ESEE Izula(not Izula II) should be under $50. I think the Kabar Navy Mark I would be a nice knife for around $50 too. It has a nice look to it and I'd say it would hold up quite well. If the person wants a cheaper fixed blade, I don't see how you could really go wrong with a Gerber Big Rock. It's not expensive but should hold up to some pretty good use. Good luck! I hope you find some knives that will fit the bill for what you're looking for. :)

From my experience

Opinel
Mora
Okapi
svord peasant
Izula

my favorite budget knives .

From personal experience and what I have read elsewhere, I don't think you can dismiss any of the knives already listed.
Buck,Opinel,Mora,Condor,Vic SAK,Ontario Rat 1, Kabar Dozier folder, are all excellent suggestions that i personally own.

The others listed either have mostly good brand reputation or reviews of the individual knife.

And I am sure there are many other good ones that have not been mentioned including the Cold Steel Bushman for a fixed blade economical useful and "fun" knife.

Thanks. Some of those listed were among what I would recommend -- e.g. Buck and Mora -- but there there were others that have not had any personal experience with, such as Condor and RAT. I appreciate the info.
