If somebody said . . .

Most people aren't into knives like we are so I'd probably sit down in front of a computer with them add fill there amazon cart with a vic pioneer, mora classic and a cold steel machete, total is probably $50 free shipping.

There's not much most of us couldn't do with that assortment of tools.

I think you're onto something there

If you were to put together a trio of blades to cope with "everything" on a low budget ... but going for the best of what is available ... and then put together a trio of "best of the best" no limit knives ... just how much more effective would the "no limit" choices be ?

It would make for an interesting review ...

Regardless of the wide spread opinion on this forum, you would be missin the boat by not lookin at Gerber. Almost all the y have ,is 50 or less. I have 7or 8 different Gerbers and like all of them. Regards Henry

There would be different "trio's" for different regions but I think it would make for a good topic.

In high desert brushy areas I'd prefer a machete or shovel to an axe but in the northern forest the axe is king. My vic pioneer is always a usefull tool.

Nothing that wasn't already mentioned. Prices may be a bit higher now.

Folder: Ontario Rat 1, $25
Small fixed blade: Becker Necker, $35
Utility: Mora clipper, new stainless version, $12
Medium rough use: Condor Bushlore, new thinner version, $25
Larger rough use: Condor Rodan, $25

I would spend the $60-70 and get the Rat 1, the Mora and one of the Condors. You can't go out there with just one blade. This combo covers everything and gives you redundancy.

Almost all spydercos. Ladybug, dragonfly, delica, endura, tenacious, and resilience. As mentioned earlier the Ontario rat 1 is decent. And despite all the hate around them, cold steel knives are a good value.

Are they interested in fixed or folder? I'd suggest that if they're a bit new to the knife scene, it might be a good idea to get them something cheap (I love my Mora) and something to sharpen it on.
My father gave me a little oilstone when I was young. I practiced sharpening so much, I wore down a Taylors' Eyewitness on it while learning to put a good edge on it. Wish I still had that little folder, even with a dished out sheepsfoot blade:o

Like has already been mentioned Buck puts out a good product and many can be had for less than $50.00 . If a traditional pocket knife is what your after Case is using some excellent carbon steel in there cv lines . Many can be had for less than $50.00 .
A sak and a Mora however would be really hard to beat . If I only had $50.00 to spend that is what I would get .

If I were buying a fixed blade, it would be a Mora Robust..absolutely a fantastically, well, trully "robust" field knife..I'd then take what was left over and buy a good Victorinox, and it would be money well spent.
Just got a Mora R btw..and promise, it is everything it sounds like it would be..still stunned..

If I did not need a fixed blade, and had the option between a slipjoint or a folder, it would be one of the beefier versions of a Victorinox SAK..so many options, and versatility..the Vics are hard to beat for the $.

For $50, I don't understand why going new is always mentioned. Flea market, antique store, pawn shop, gun shows- I find slipjoints, axes/hatchets, SAK, puuko's, machetes etc. for around $10 each. High quality and very affordable, not to mention fun to search for and rewarding to find. Plus you can tell quality in use, and nostalgia from the battle scars/use patterns found.

Just another viable option.

Kershaw Cryo - I think - I'll let you know after mine arrives.

SAK, Leatherman Wingman/Sidekick, Mora, BK11 or 14, Buck 110, Rat-1, KaBar Dozier, Case Peanut or small/med Stockman, Leek, D-Fly 2,Ambitious, Persistance, Resiliance, UKPK. All depends what they want it for.
