If you can't laugh at yourself...

Maybe the 1st 2 of that list.

I love sharpening, and like high end knives.

Also, as a chef, my knives earn me a decent salary, so sharpness is important in my line of work.

I would be The Indecisive. Every time I put together a rotation that seems perfect for me I start thinking about completely changing what and how I carry. Extensive time is dumped into researching the benefits and liabilities of different blade shapes, grinds, sizes of knives, lock types, steel types, carry configurations, etc. Then, once I've tracked down and purchased precisely what I want, a different idea pops into my head and I'm down the rabbit hole again.

* The pigeonholers - those who like to categorize other knife enthusiasts into specific categories. :D

I am not sure what group I fall into, other than:
* the remorseful - those who return to reality and sanity from their over-consumption phase to discover they have about 100 knives and they only need about 3.

Peoplke tend to take a simple thing like a knife, make it very complexed & complicated. Zero reason to make mountain out of molehill. JMHO

I am the curious knife fan. For instance, what are some people doing to their knives that gets snot and/or crap in them that needs to be beat out?

How about the inveterate knife photographer/commenter?

Hi this is a picture of what I am carrying or which is on the way.
<Picture>

Followed by many others posting the same thing.

Eventually this is followed by:

A reply showing the picture posted by the original poster and comments on that knife together with a picture of other posters and comments about their knives which is then followed in the same post by another picture of another poster and comments about his knife. Finally the poster ends with a post of a picture of the knife he is carrying/or which is on the way.

Eventually we end up with 10 to 20 knife photos in one post which have been previously been posted with comments about those knives which ends up with the knife the current poster is carrying or which is on the way.

This now leads another poster re-posting the prior knife pictures with his or her comments about those prior posts plus his or particular knife he or she is carrying or which is on the way.

Now everyone who has had a comment about their original post and picture will post a comment thanking a poster for their comment.

Rinse, lather and repeat. :D

Nothing is worse as the Brand Loyalist. There are so many great companies, live a little.

But only brand X is good. I haven't tried the other brands but I KNOW they aren't as good. ;)

I want the smallest set of cutting tools that will do all the jobs I need done. That comes with a price. Reviews will only get someone close. You have to buy and try to figure out what works best for you.

The back-up artist- one who enjoys a knife so much they buy an extra or two, just in case said knife happens to get discontinued or lost. Often times, nearly every knife he buys, he gets two of, dramatically increasing the price of their hobby. Note: usually the back-up artist applies this to more than just knives, usually other items as well.

I guess I'm the crazy sharpener, I'm sure I'm into the thousands with sharpening gear. I'm somewhat of the pristine knife person too. I definitely use my knives, but I pretty much immediately clean whatever gunk is on them off, unless it's a true beater.

The Bushcrafter: if its not 1095, it's no good! Anything modern seems to scare them off... They need to be able to strike a spart from their blade!

The mallbushcrafter: ( mix of a mall ninja and a bushcrafter) makes endless reviews of knives about the only point that should matter in a ''bushcraft knife''. If it can batton trough 2by4s. lol, those never stop to amaze me
Personally, I am a:
Reluctant brand loyalist: sub branch of brand loyalist... I am always seeking to try new blades and tried 20+ brands at least, but always come back to the same 1-2 brands. They just can't stop producing great blades.

This one is also my case, and it's a bit brand specific...
The shameful brand loyalist: another sub of brand loyalist. Without naming a brand, but they do such great knives at such a great price, but you feel like a mallninja buying and carrying those. You also like the knives, but Lynn, why can't you behave properly??? lol

No. I wouldn't say there's a "right answer" there.

Some people use some of their knives but not all of their knives. Some people collect certain knives without any intentions of ever using them. Some people buy knives as investments and never use them. Some people buy more knives than they could ever use just because they like them. Some people have heirloom knives or knives of other sentimental value that they choose to never use. And some people buys knives but use them only for light tasks because they don't want to risk damaging them.

As far as I'm concerned, the only "right answer" is- Whatever people want to do with THEIR knives is entirely THEIR business.

I'm a guy who likes knives, and has a need for knives. Beyond that, I'm a guy who doesn't like to pigeon-hole himself into any particular category or definition. I've never spent any time trying to figure out how to define my interest in knives, or myself as a knife enthusiast beyond the fact that I find knives useful, and I like them. :)
I think the op is insinuating there's an implied "right" answer by the person asking, an insinuation with which I would agree.

I fall into different categories at different times.

I think mostly I'm an "appreciative user": someone who appreciates high class knives, and likes to try them out, but usually sells them and goes back to the middle road frequent users.

The Dilettante / poor impulse control. "Hey, that one looks neat. Ooo, so does that one! Oh, shiny! I want to try that!"

New category for submission:

Johnny Drama: you're just here for the drama. Got your pop corn ready. Known associates of The Instigators (a separate BF subgroup). May own a few butter knives somewhere. Mainly seen in the political arena, W&C, and GB&U.

:D

Guess I'm an over-prepared operator.

I tend to separate myself from group think and don't believe I fall into any category.

I like performance-oriented knives that give the consumer their money's worth; this means that I consider knives like the Buck 110, Spyderco Endura and CS GI Tanto to be supreme examples of top-tier knifemaking, whereas knives like the Shirogorov Hati, Chris Reeve Sebenza and Rockstead Chi are little more than bougie (and maybe a little pretentious) pocket fedoras in my view. I have a large high value collection and usually carry something different every day.

Lately I've been really into Spyderco and especially Buck, and have also been having a thing for inexpensive knives that manage to be classy yet high-performance; been carrying my Buck 301 a lot and buying myself a Lux to see how I like it.

EDIT: Nevermind! Comeuppance has posted a couple which apply to me. I guess I could be considered an Overprepared Budgeteer and sometimes a Minimalist! :D

I'm the Operator: If the knife isn't designed to totally kill some uncontrolled pitbulls/rotties/bullmastiffs etc, & butcher wild rabbits, why bother?
