If you could design the ultimate multi tool...

...What would you have on it?

I watched an episode of 'King of the Hill' last night (First time), and one of the guys pulled out a SAK and unfolded a pizza cutter, and used it for.....you guessed it.....his pizza. :)

This got me thinking of this subject. We already have Leatherman tools geared for wine enthusiasts, Gerber and leatherman tools geared for the EOD teams, electricians, fishermen, ect.

What would be your ultimate multi tool or SAK?

Hmm, LM Wave size package with:
  • Spydie Hole on both blades
  • Better steel
  • Double ground flat screwdrivers
  • S30V flat ground straight blade
  • S30V Spydie rescue style serrated blade
  • SOG style user selectable blades
  • Chisel tool
  • built in hex socket.
Nothing else comes to mind... The new Wave and Charge should come closer to my ideal than my current closest match, LM Wave.

No pizza cutter :D

LM wave design but Able to take them apart for cleaning and oilling. And better locking system and better one hand opening system. Also able to select the tools you want or build it yourself type. Not just a few model that you can choose from but able to specify which tool you need to bette suite you need

I don't have one ultimate tool in mind, but I do have several specialized ones that I'd like to see:

1. Pliers/wire cutters with bit holder in one handle and driver in the other. Nothing else.

2. Juice-sized tool with good shears instead of pliers, and the plain edge blade replaced with a serrated blade.

3. Alox SAK with blade, scissors, phillips head screwdriver out-the-front like the Yeoman, and combo can opener/bottle opener/screwdriver. I think they could fit that into two backsprings?

Some great ideas!

I see lots of views, but only a few replies!

Let's hear what you'd like to have in your Multi tool!

I actually have a couple of ideas.
A LM SideClip with scissors would be great for me.

But the ultimate for me would be a tool with needle nose pliers on one side and heavy duty cutter on the other end/side. Something that could cut small cables, metal bands, and those straps that hold new toys in the box that my kids get at Xmas. For me the needle nose pliers get in the way when I'm try to cut something in a tight spot.
And if you really wanted to make it the Ultimate Tool, you would need to add fingernail clippers and a brush to get the lint out of your belly button. :D

Corkscrew , bottle opener , flat & phillips screwdriver , small shear and a straight 2 1/2" carbon steel blade. Kinda like a Buck Summit with better steel and smaller .

I'd like to see this stuff in one tool:

1. Awl/leather punch.
2. Chisel/scraper
3. Changeable sawblades.
4. Replaceable wire cutter blades.
5. One implement containing 4-5 micro-screwdrivers.
6. A curved or hawkbill blade.

Please email me when ready :D

I'm a big fan of the Leatherman Wave; but have realized it isn't perfect. There was a thread about this on the Mission forum over on knifeforums a while back and there was not much consensus. Basically, I'd like a slightly longer version of the Leatherman Wave (call it the Leatherman Monsoon, Tidal Wave, or something catchy) with a non-conductive titanium handle.

It sounds like the Charge will be a step in the right direction. I'll probably try to pick one of those up this summer; but would really like something a bit longer (for more leverage).

I like this multi-tool forum.

Large Victorinox lockback with 1h open S30V main blade, serrated secondary blade, Wenger style scissors, diamond coated file, awl (ala VX Soldier), medium and jewelers flat screwdrivers, phillips screwdriver, pliars...

AND A F#%$ING POCKET CLIP!!!

SpydeRench has crescent wrench and many guys like this feature. What do you think about multi-tool with crescent wrench? Do you like the muti-tools with crescent wrench or not?

I really don;t care for multitools with knife blades. I mean, who cares? I already have couple of knives on me already. The #1 tool I use is the pliers and I want them to be extra robust. I'd much rather see a stripped down tool with maybe 4 tools that was of extremely high quality than a mediocre one with 12 features.

Tools of interest to me:

Pliers, perhaps with replaceable cutters like the Gerber
Saw blade with replaceable inserts
File
Prytool
Scissors

Also, a pocket clip, handle grip overlays such as G10 or wood, and maybe some SAK tweezers, toothpick and pen that slide into the overlays. Definitley the tweezers if nothing else.

My preference for steel would be CPM 3V. :D

Hey Tim Leatherman, you reading this? :)

The truth is I would be willing to drop a couple hundred on a tool that was geared towards the high end market.

No knife blades.
needle nose pliers w/overbuilt wire cutters
saw
straight and crosscut file
fine diamond file
2 phillips heads
2 flatheads (one thick, wide, overbuilt for hose clamps, etc.)
scissors
awl
wood chisel
folding lanyard loop a la ST200

size, weight, ergos of the ST200 would suit me fine...

If i were to make a "multi tool" i would want it to be modular in nature leaving the end user the ability to mix and match what they wanted and where it would be located on the tool. Sell it as a primary part with tools available seperately or in packages. That way you could sellect and insert camping orented tools for camping and say fishing oriented tools for fishing or what have you. If the engineering could be worked out i bet it would sell pretty well.

I have to agree with Macbeth and C_yeager -- I think the future is being able to visit a web site and build a custom SAK or multi-tool, with just the tools/options you want. Very similar to what Buck is doing with their custom 110s.

Gerber was doing that for a short time, but from what I understand, it wasn't very popular, so it was discontinued. Leatherman or SOG would do well in this area, provided they marketed the tool to the right groups. I'm anxiously awaiting the Charge XTi, hoping it is a vast improvement of the Wave. I also hope it is heavier duty than the current Wave.

I agree with Peter; I'd be willing to pay a premium price for a multi tool, with custom implements, and high end steel. I use my tool each and every day, and I would really have a tough time getting by without it.

Thanks for all of the replies. Let's keep it going!

Nearly everything I want in a multi-tool could be achieved by mating the best features of the SOG PowerLock and the Gerber Legend, with a few features from Leatherman's and Spyderco's multi-tools.

SOG plier jaw design
SOG compound leverage
Legend replaceable carbide wire-cutters
Legend folding tool placement on the outside of the handles
SOG user-configurable tool selection
Either locking mechanism for folding tools
Legend one-hand opening for blade and scissors (actually I want Spyderco/Leatherman opening holes)
Leatherman high-end steel blade
Legend scissors
Legend replaceable saw holder
Leatherman/Spyderco diamond-dust file
Either 1/4" hex bit adapter
SOG TiNi coating
SOG overall toughness and quality (with apologies to Gerber)

So why can't one company get *everything* right?

My ultimate multi-tool would be built by Victorinox and include some of these features that would come in handy for gun repair and maintenence,

-Hex drivers instead of the Phillips head
-Torx head drivers
-Slotted head screwdrivers made wide and fat for gunsmithing
-Pliers obviously!
-File
-Some kind of adapter for screwing a bore brush onto
-2 of their fine blades
-1/4" adapter for all of the other size bits you might need

A "Survival Tool" would be a great idea too with-

-A replaceable ferrocerium rod built into it,
-A nice saw, scissors, file, gut hook, morse code engraved on one side of the handle and an inch ruler on the other,
-Maybe a seat belt cutter and glass window breaker or something like that.

Oh yeah, and POCKET CLIPS!!!

The larger Victorinox CyberTool models (34 and 41) have a lot of what you're looking for.

I'd still line up behind you for a Vic "Gunsmith" model! :)
