If you could only take 5 items, what would it be?

Here is what i carry, and have survived with here in Norway.
1. Cold Steel Trailmaster
2. Paracord 120 meters
3. Aluminium waterbottle with a big opening, can also be used as a cooking pot.
4. Magnesium block
5. A fishing net 26 monafilement
6. Compass with a mirror
7. Montain tarp, a special tarp with reflective foil inside and a liner. The tarp has zippers around the edge, and in the midddle. It can be used as a poncho, tent, sleeping bag and a wind bag to shelter from the elements in the montains.
This works, I have survived with this equipment for up to two weeks in sub-Zero temperatures here in Norway.

My basic outdoor kit:

1. Military canteen with cup
2. Mission MPK
3. Modified Ruger 10/22 + ammo
4. Camo tube tent
5. Streamlight Cyclone light w/lithium batteries
6. Magnesium firestarter
7. First aid kit

I have walked around the wood with these items and some foods for three day straight in the past with no problem.

Lets see... Seven things....

OK, I'll assume I'm dressed for wandering around in the daytime in this weather. I have gloves, a hat, and things like that. I'll remove the things normally on my belt and in my pockets, because they sorta kill a chunk of this list.

# 10 can. Or some other pot type device. If this is anything, I'll make it a nice big stock pot so I can take it home and add it to my kitchen when I get back...

-- Why? Water. Good clean source all around me, but it's frozen. I can melt in this, I can purify river water, I can make stew, whatever...

Metal Match. Fire.

Knife. I'd probably vote for my cold steel tanto, though I don't usually carry it around Too expensive for me to routinely carry...

One parachute. Provides me with all the cord and material I need. Can be used for shelter, signaling, water making, whatever

from here, we get into cozy things....

One goretex rainsuit, insulated, with removable liner. Keeps me dry, and I can take it home with me..

One sleeping bag, with goretex top shell, plastic bottom. See above

folding knife. It's cold outside, I'd probably go with one of my Enduras. Easier to access with gloves on.

Those are my things. Any winter-type climate with snow, short of tundra and sea ice, I'd stay with this list. Colder, make the rainsuit a good parka or a snowsuit. Tundra and sea ice, I'd swap the folder for a cord or two of wood...

Or barring that, as much jp-8 as I can carry.warmer climes, we can ditch the sleeping bag, and add a nicety in there, maybe a canteen...

After reading all the previous posts and done with my afternoon nap I would make up my wish list as follows:

1) Knife (6 inch sheath type preferred).
2) Fire starter (metal match with Mg if I can ask).
3) Water container/bottle
4) Aluminum pot (most of us opt for coffee can, why?).
5) Poncho or tarp or tent (if worse come to worse I could use rainfly as wrap-around poncho maybe).
6) Sleeping bag (if weather changes for worse).
7) .22 gun with ammo. I have to admit it was added after reading the excellent topic on survival firearms. It was quite convincing to me... Marksmanship is at the bare minimum. Mainly based on airgun plus mandatory mil service. Main tool was AK of 7.62 or 7.65 caliber (I guess I never mastered myself in it but still know how to clean the heck out of it). In worst scenario (no more ammo or total failure) I can dig roots with it, club down marmots and practice dissamle/reassemble until tired to keep mind and survival will focused....(bad joke, sorry).

I traded in the parachute cord for the gun since I still trust more in a good gun than in my non-existing trapping skills. Other option is just trade them both in for food. At least that is how I plan to survive from the 'arm-chair'.

BTW, the seven items seemed to me a generous # too.

Best regards to all,

HM

I am wearing a Moonstone climbing suit (waterproof, insulated, and light). I would be wearing a pair of Ranger boots with solid toe and a tactical vest/pack with these 7 items:

#1. A 7"-8" knife: Randall, Mad Dog, Busse, or Mission, depending on exact enviroment.

#2. Firestarter and kindling (burning block).

#3. A "space" blanket/ reflective plastic tarp. Maybe a black tarp instead...

#4. A water purification system and water carrying device. (iodine tablets too)

#5. Paracord or "tiger" bailing twine (I don't know the real name of the twine, but my brother and dad call it "tiger" twine-extra thick and rated for something like 700 lbs.)

#6. My mom's first aid kit (she is a nurse and it is "well" equipped...)

#7. My fiancee, "The northern girls, with the way they kiss, they keep their boyfriends warm at night!" Maybe I don't need the firestarter!!!
