Imagine yourself needing to survive a few days in the event of a natural disaster. Say you plan for 3-10 days independently with only a backpack worth of supplies. You can only grab one fixed blade CR knife, and your in a wooded and/or urban environment. You might need to make shelter, fuel, even defend the above; who knows....

You would chose....

Eh. Just edit in "What CRK would you choose ?" and you'll be GTG;)

Personally I'd take my Large Plain Jane Regular...so I could kill myself with it before the snakes, wolves, bears etc get the chance:D

My brother in laws, Dad, and Grandfathers would roll their eyes at that comment, especially my mothers father(RIP). Big time hunters/campers/all around outdoorsy types.

Me? Short of hiking /camping/fishing I'd be in a heap of trouble lost in the woods:D

I would HAVE to take one of my Large P Sebenzas, to me, it is the Ultimate CRK knife, I wouldn't leave home without it.

my only fixed is a Professional Soldier in S35VN, so..that one over all (fixed blade avoids any problems), tested and used it already, hell of a blade, grind is SICK!
of my folders, the Ummi! (but you need a take down tool and wrench to be 100% safe)

I would take a one piece with the handle full of my blood pressure pills.

Thank you for the input, I hope there is more to come!

I'm leaning towards a fixed blade, but having trouble deciding what size blade I need, and/or if a hatchet is worth it.

I'm not settled on which CRK would serve as the best survival knife.

I enjoy doing quite a bit of solo primitive camping with minimal gear and there have also been times I have basically lived out of my pickup for a week or two. It is interesting to learn what one actually needs and what can be dispensed with for basic living. As in anything else, practice is priceless and it can be fun to test one's skills. The best survival knife being the one you have with you when the "ship hits the sand" I personally feel I am quite well served by the two I have with me at all times. My Large and Small Sebenzas. Using the theory that two is one, one is none. At least the combination works for me...... :)

Oh crap, I just realized I can only have one knife in this thread. Okay, I'll take my Big Seb then....:D

I'd take my Umnumzaan. The blade and tip are a bit thicker than on my large Sebbie; might be a good thing in a heavy-duty survival mode where prying or light batoning might be in order.

Pacific for me. Great thick knife. Great for making spears and tiger traps with. Love the double serrations for cutting vines to make rope if needed.

Use rocks if you need axe. Usually plenty around.

You said fixed bladed CRK. It would have to be a Shadow IV for me. Awesome knife!
If you said folder... Large regular Sebbie all the way!

If I could only bring 1 fixed crk knife, it would have to Mountaneer II , which I unfortunately only possess in my dreams... :grumpy:
Apart from a fixed CRK, I guess it would be one of my large regulars, like this one:

Thanks a lot guys, as it looks taking your all input into consideration I will go with beginning to EDC my zaan, and grab a new Pacific to put in my bag. Then I should have at least 2 knives.

I need to decide if my small micarta sebenza I just bought offers anything my zaan doesn't. Might have to sell it!

Actually your small Micarta Sebbie offers much. Consider it to be your last ditch hide out knife in the chance that you are separated from your pack or your Zaan is taken from you by "authority" or force. When you are around other people or "government" in a survival situation anything can happen. The little Sebbie is light weight and easily concealed on your person, perhaps carried quietly in your hiking sock or some other discreet location. Never hurts to have an additional "back up".

If you said folder, it would have to be the Large Regular Seb all day long. Since you said fixed, I would have to say whatever the largest and strongest knife Chris Reeve has ever produced. Since I am not familiar with the CRK fixed blades, I wouldn't know what their largest and strongest knife is (I only say largest/strongest knife if it is all I have and I need to survive in the wilderness).

Otherwise I am interested in the professional soldier and the nyala for back pack carry. I think the nyala looks like it would make an awesome EDC for a small fixed blade. The blade profile of the Nyala reminds me of the large regular sebenza blade. I especially like how the edge of the blade on the nyala is below where your fingers lay on the handle rather than inline or level with the handle.

Thank you Desert hermit, I will take your advice.

Thank you burnside as well. I like your suggestion of the Nyala.

What I think I will do is, EDC my zaan. Stash my small sebby in the bottom of my pack along the rail velcro zip tied in place. Also; I will keep a Pacific with my BOB, in which case I will attach it to my belt, and pick up a Nyala which I will put in my wife's BOB. Or I will keep the Nyala in the food supplies, in my pack as well.

I said 1 knife, looks like I will have 4+.

Oh, and I will put the 25 in my wife's BOB or on her somewhere if I can't find somewhere good to keep it on myself.

Now I just need a leatherman multi-tool or a SAK, and a hatchet. Must research hatchets.

How does that sound?
