If you could pick one knife to take to Afghanistan what would it be?

Im wondering what everybody would choose to do most military chores and a knife they could trust even in the worst situations.
 
This question tears me apart.

I don't know if I'd go ontario rat 1 or zt560

EDIT: I'd put my life into my ESEE 4

Well since I've heard it being referred as "the sand box", I would take a fixed blade. I would hate cleaning out sand from the pivot every night. So something like an Esee 4 or 6 or maybe something from busse/kin.
 
I'd take a BK2 if you're a high ranking logistics officer. If you're a grunt(not saying there's anything wrong being one), I'd take a Leatherman. Weight is a pain in the back. Literally.
 
For a folder, I would bring my ZT500 MUDD for one reason and one reason alone, SAND. Gets in everything and you do not want sand to jam deployment or lock up when you're gonna need it. I do understand one of the main uses for a blade is utility, not combat, but when I want 100% lock up, I'll take my ZT500 because it has a completely sealed locking mechanism.

For a fixed blade, I would probably bring my Gerber LMF II. I do have more higher end fixed blades, but I can see the LMF II's features (molle sheath with good retention, glass break, serrations) becoming useful.
 
Emerson's and Striders for the folder and a Strider Fixed blade or a good Ol becker necker. A zt 560 might be a solid choice. I've seen some striders with NSN numbers and I know both Emerson and Strider will go out of their way to get a knife in your hand is your deploying soon.

Since he can't get a ZT MUDD I'm not sure he will have that option.

I would probably take a Benchmade Contengo. As long as you have access to water occasionally, sand shouldn't be much of an issue if you rinse it off.
 
American Kami Colubris. Great for the mundane everyday tasks and if it was needed for emergency self defense I know it would do great.

Lots of previous threads discuss this, but I would say that the most useful tool, if you can only get one, would be a multi-tool, such as a Leatherman MUT or Wave.
I would not recommend an expensive knife, because things tend to disappear. My eldest son, lost Emerson CQC-7 and Spyderco Military in Iraq.
 
Another vote for the BK17.

Small and light enough to not worry about much and not get in the way, but strong enough to beat on, and a stabby point in case something needs stabbing.
 
Iraq is a more arid country and even there you don't need any special pivot or lock to prevent sand build up/obstruction

I would never take one knife on a deployment.
 
For a fixed blade (i dont have much experience in them so maybe not the most valid suggestion) id take a becker bk2 (one of the few iv actually had first hand experience with) For a folder i would bring a cold steel recon 1 cold steel voyager or ontario rat 1/ utilitac 2 (the utilitac 2 is very durable and still is useable when sand and dirt gets in it, mine has a broken off tip, a bent liner and has been in a ton of dirt, now its gritty to open and close but ti still locks up great)
 
Hi folks. Finally getting around to my first post after lurking a long time. I would think two fixed blades would be in order. A heavy work blade and one more suited for quick and just deployment. Perhaps a bouble edged weapon.

However, I wonder how my generous tax dollars don't adequately equip our fine soldiers when sent to save the world.
 
I'd take a Kabar. If it's been good enough for the last how many decades? of warfare, it'll be good enough for me.
