If you don't get email from me here's why.

This morning I downloaded AOL version 6 and it somehow managed to destroy every bookmark, every address in my address book, all my old email that I'd been saving for six months and just about destroyed my computer. I have spent the entire day trying to recover.

So, all the email addresses I had for everybody here are gone along with a lot of other stuff. You'll have to write me because I can't write you until I get an email address. Lucky for me, I guess, that I answer my email first thing every AM so I don't owe anybody any mail at least.

I hate AOL more everyday.

Bill,

Don't think you are alone. When the new version of Juno came out, I got all the instructions on how to save my files and email addesses and email folders. Guess what? No way to save bookmarks!! And some of the addresses were not saved because of "formatting problems". I took over a month researching and finding my old websites, and still can't find a few.

Hang in there, we're all still here and will send you our addresses.

If charging money for services available for free, frequent connection-dropping,frequent massive failures like you seem to have, and the way AOL takes over your computer so rival software won't function properly isn't enough to get you to stop using it,AOL is now merged with Time-Warner,which unless I'm mistaken means that Ted Turner/Jane Fonda are getting a piece of that check you send every month! anything that puts another nickel in Hanoi Jane's pocket is on my list of things not to do. My $.02

I had the same problems with Netscape 6. And Netscape and AOL are partners.

When I reloaded the old Netscape 5.x, and then uninstalled Netscape 6, all the data I lost returned.

You CAN partially rebuild your address book by hooking onto the forum and getting each poster's address off the top of the post.

hang in there, Bill! For me, this development is a great incentive to stick with AOL 5.0 or whatever it is I've got on here. Good luck,

Uncle Bill,
I tried AOL 6.0 and it was a disaster

. Fortunately, it creates a separate new directory and I was able to uninstall it and reinstall the Version 5.0 that was still on my computer without a grreat deal of difficulty. I wish I had thought to warn you - hopefully you can do the same.

Dayum!!!!
Sounds like one of WebTV's "upgrades."
On the last one we got there is a way to retrograde the summer upgrade due to the problems some have had with it.
A friend of mine volunteered to be a host for the new upgrade coming out and she has had nothing but trouble
along with several others and WebTV says they're gonna send it out anyway.
I may not take it unless there's a retrograde to go with it as well.

Good luck Bro.!!!

Sounds like a nightmare as the megalith monster AOL steamrolls America. Everyones bitches about them.

I think AT&T hs some speed problems, but everything works. Even my Hotmail account seems easier and safer than AOL.

Good luck to all of us and the mysteries of the net.

Haven't you guys heard the term "AO Hell" before?

They keep sending me cd's with their latest and greatest version. They make wonderful coasters.

Mike, that's what I used -- the Cd they sent me. I should have used it for a coaster as you suggested. When I tried to load it everything got disabled so I called the AOL tech help department. They couldn't help so I had to uninstall everything that said AOL and reload version 6. In the process I lost everything. Berk, I'll try installing version 5 and see if I can get things back and thanks for help, all. I can use all I can get!

Bill--I never found AOL's tech dept. to be helpful back in the days when I used to call them. Nor did they even bother to sound very interested usually, altho admittedly my tech problems tend to be at a pretty simple level. I suspect you'll do better using the counsel of some of the computer savvy people here at HI.

If you don't have a disc for AOL 5.0, I do, and can drop it in the mail in the morning Monday, it'll go to Reno in the evening mail, and in your box Tuesday. Even if you can get downloads ( I'll check it out ) the disc is sometimes literally hours faster than the download. Let me know if you want me to send it. At least to give you a backup to restore from the next time problems happen.

I feel for you Uncle! I tried @$#%##@ AOL for a few months and hated it!! When I tried to uninstall it, nothing on my computer worked anymore---I had to get tech support help just to make my computer work. Aol is like computer cancer if you ask me. And Mike L. I recommend using their CDs for targets, or skeet pigeons

I had to strip my hard drive after AOL. Best used for shotgun work.

Don`t install it.
