If you had $175......

I’m pretty sure the backpacker is the scaleless model and the backpacker pro is the scales model. Not sure how the caper fits into that family.

If I had 175$ first thing I would do is check out the exchange and get a lnib knife worth more than 175$.

Not sure what size knives the OP likes , or folding vs fixed blade but I would check out Kizer and WE knives’ lineups. There are some nice ZT knives within this price range too I believe.

They still have some zt 620cfs available at blade hq for within this price. If OP likes a big knife I would get this hands down.
The Caper is the backpacker but with micarta scales permanently attached. The backpacker pro has screw on g10 scales that also can be purchased separately for older backpackers.

As mentioned before, check the exchange first, then Find a Kephart style knife, just like the overall utility and classic design. Maybe save up a little more to get a JK full size Kephart, or an LT Wright Next Gen in A2 and mountain textured handles. I also have liked the Fiddleback production Kephart, a little different than a regular keppie, but cool design.

I have an LT Wright Genesis which has a Kephart style blade.

Knifeworks Exclusive, Benchmade Griptilian, micarta/m390

I actually just purchased this knife last night! Really looking forward to getting it, and if I knew this existed I probably would have got this knife instead of the 551-1 20cv Grip. Can’t go wrong with a Griptillian! And that’s coming from someone who mostly collects ZT knives.

A spyderco sage 5 and an alox cadet put me just over; no wait, I have reward points.

Merited - I'd get another Spyderco Gayle Bradley, my current EDC, because it is a great all-purpose folder, and because one of my jealous knife buddies snatched up the one I had so I have to buy a replacement.]

I literally just finished modifying my GB 2 about 30 minutes ago by clearing some room for the lock release and it is now my favorite knife that I own. My first real go at a knife with a Dremel and I am so happy I did it. At the 150-175 price I also have a Spyderco Caribbean that I love and I am waiting for the Amalgam and the Rex Military to be released in that price range.

Hogue EX01 or Benchmade Mini Presidio II. Or put a few bucks with that $175 and maybe get the Hogue EX automatic A01 or the Benchmade Mini Auto Stryker.
Struggling between these two... love he tanto shape of Ex01 but also the full blackout finish of 575bk... any suggestion?

It's amazing what a Dremel will do. I did the same thing to my Positron. I just had to take it slow and removed just enough CF to make getting at the lockbar easy. Looking at it, you couldn't tell I did anything.
