If you had a time machine and could go back in time and buy just one knife, what would it be ?
Would you pick a knife that'll be worth a fortune in mint condition ?, would it be a knife you've always wanted ?, or do you just want to experience a worn out old knife in brand new condition ?
First I would stop and pick up an original pair of rayban's ( aviators are my favorite type of shades , and raybans are king ) , then I would travel back to early 1930's Missouri to find out what my grandfather's first knife was and pick one up for myself. I have no clue what his first knife was, but growing up on a 1930's Missouri farm that still used an outhouse I'd imagine it wasn't anything fancy. It was probably something cheaper like an imperial, colonial, or a hardware house brand such as ec Simmonds or diamond edge. Being able to use his first knife from new just like he did would be an awesome experience, and even though I could easily just go for an original Remington bullet trapper this experience would be worth way more to me.

If I had a time machine, the last thing I would be thinking about would be buying a pocket knife.

I would go back to April 2010 and find my 2010 self and warn him against several very bad outcomes that he could prevent if only he had known what was coming. And I would hand him an Alox SAK and tell him that was the only knife he was going to ever need.

I'm pretty sure that Charlie does have a time machine.

It's a fun question. Our current money would have no value in the past so we'd have to take a temporary job... we might make some good money selling laptop computers from the future. ;) But I won't get caught up in the details of the hypothetical scenario.

I'm not sure what single knife I would like the best. There are some gorgeous exhibition knives that would be a joy to admire. There are some more practical patterns that would be a joy to use.

If value is important then you might be better off going back a few months and picking up a GEC SFO instead of an antique knife. :p ...Or if you still have access to the time machine, you could also go back in time several years to sell the antique knife when the market for antique knives was stronger.

I think that if I could only pick one knife, it would be an exhibition knife.... maybe the 1822 blade Joseph Rodgers year knife. That might be hard to buy though. A brand new 1910 sowbelly would be a bit more realistic... as realistic as we can be when we are talking about time travel. :D

I'd go back to 2011 and warn myself to never join bladeforums. It would apparently cause a rip in the space-time continuum but I would save myself a lot of money ;)

When this baby hits 88 MPH, you're going to see some *edit*.

Yeah, I can very strongly identify with that thought!!!!

But for knives? Hmmmm.

Maybe go back to 1889's London, and find a nice upscale shop that has the best offerings of the pearl lobster patterns by the best cutlers of Sheffield. Maybe with a couple blades, scissors, pipe reamer, and nail file. A real 'Toff's' knife. Yeah, that's the ticket!

Then I'd come back to meet myself at age 16 and kick me right in the butt!

Go back to about 1934 when my dad was 8 yrs old, and take his two blade Barlow out of his room he's told me about (figure his dad would buy another). Would then give it to him next month on his 91st birthday.
Might grab of few other things at the local hardware & toy store.

I'd go back to Egypt and trade for Pharao Tuts dagger made from meteor metal. In return I'd give him a gas station tactical all black heavily serrated assisted folder which never needs sharpening and has lots of skulls on it.

He would think he got the better end of the deal and would have trouble holding back his grin and me too.
Win win.

Also even if the dagger would be carbon dated to be from our time (since it travelled through time and didn't age) and thus be worthless for a museum or collector it's still a cool piece of art for me personally.

Yep, me too! :D

I would however, like to travel back in time to 17th century Sheffield, and find out what sort of knives Obadiah Barlow actually made

I would enjoy reading your posts in the "What 'Traditional Knife' are ya totin' today?" topic. :D

Cut up some apples with my meteorite iron dagger.

id go find James Black who made the first Bowie knife and learn the secrets. legends has it that he worked behind a curtain so no one can see. eventually he wanted to teach the son of the family that took care of em. the secrets and learned he had forgotten the art. they say he made had managed to make real Damascus steel

Lol. I'd love to be in a position to write this. Might even go as far as checking different fruits for which one gives the best patina but for sure no destruction tests with this baby.
Thank you for the picture.

Another knife which I'd travel back in time for would be this Lucknow Dagger here.

dont forget to bring extra fuel lines and gasoline ;)

My idea of a time machine is more like this ;) :D

I would use my time machine to go back to 1827 Natchez, LA and find Jim Bowie convalescing after the famous Sandbar Fight. I would try to buy the knife he used to kill Norris Wright after that duel. The famous Bowie knife made for Jim by James Black wasn't made until 1930, but the knife Bowie used to kill Wright was made for him by his brother Rezin. It was a straight backed, rather plain butcher knife with a 9" blade.

Augie and Charlie are partners in one, I have tried buying into it- the door closed on my face!

I tend to think very specifically, and personally:

I would go back to when my great-grandfather sat on our porch steps and whittled, and pay attention.

(My brother, 18 months older than I, remembers Great Grandpa's "pocket knife." I do not. ARRRRRRRGGGGGH.)

If I'm flying back in time, I'll be doing it in my Tardis.

If it were to go back for a knife, it would only be back something like 13 years. I'd grab about 20 Camillus-made AG Russell Premium Scout knives with micarta scales, acorn shields and 154CM blades.

Honestly, I would just want to walk into a hardware store 100 or 110 years ago and see the magnificent cutlery in its native habitat. If I could only bring one knife home with me, one of those 1915 Holleys with the Charter Oak handles would be hard to pass up.

I would go back to 1964 and buy 3 Old Timers a month for year. Then I would come back and sell them on EBay.
