I doubt I will be in the market for a CR anytime soon, but you never know! I tend to appreciate smaller knives more, although my EDC's are generally things like my Pinnacle and Wegner. Once I am playing doctor full-time, though, my EDC's will switch back to one of my two Case canoes. Nice knives, but I was thinking an Umfaan may be more appropriate down the road. Is it possible to get an Umfaan with a pocket clip? Also, would a small Sebenza be a better option? I would definitely want custom graphics or some kind of decoration....I'll start planning now! I haven't gotten to play with any of the CR folders yet, but I did make a couple Kydex sheaths for some of the fixed blade models and I was very impressed.

Ummfan does not come with a clip. I like the small. I work as a Respiratory Therapist in a large hospital in Los Angeles. The small is great for cutting the clothes off dying people and cutting tape and plastic tubes and opening equipment in plastic bags. CRK is coming out with the Mnandi which is gentlemen's folder with wood inlay on both sides, integral lock,a bit smaller than the small Seb but larger than the Ummfan. This one will have a clip more like that on a pen and it will be removable without effect or need for the insert like the Sebenzas. I've seen the prototype and it is a very nice knife. I have 4 Sebenzas and they perform admirably and it will take an act of God to keep me from ordering this new one. Do yourself a favor and get one now, you don't know what you are missing all of your other knives will pale by comparision.

Chiro, an umfaan is great but if it is your first and maybe only I would get a small. I use a small almost at all times from work to church and have never had a problem. A decorated is nice especially when combined with a Graley sheath.... I carry my small wood sebenza in on to "dress" occasions and love it....

Chiro, I carry a umfaan and small Sebenza daily. The umfaan is a great "little" knife that can be used anywhere and around anyone. My small Sebenza is used more often and works like a bigger knife.

If you are leaning towards the unique models, also take a look at the CGG line. I carry the "line drive" model in a G2 canted sheath.

The Mnandi I handled at the Blade show was AWESOME! A gentlemen's folder with a wood inlay on both sides, integral lock, A SWEET KNIFE, and a MUST BUY!

Good Luck

Steve - The CGG line stands for Computer Generated Graphics - It's the line with all the "standard" decorations, the set ones. You can buy them from dealers, 1SKS has a picture with the designs all together.

After that come the custom graphics, and pics of those are scattered all round the net(and this forum

).

Steve, the Mnandi (new model) will be out in the future. Might just foot the bill for an office shirt pocket knife.

I would suggest the Mnandi also. I also overheard at the Blade Show that the Umfaan may be in for a bit of a redesign. Pocket clip similar to the Mnandi, and the thumb stud in a slightly different place for easier opening. Is this set in stone? I don't think so, but I heard a distinguished South African gentleman mention it. If this is done it will be several (many) months down the road. My vote would be for the Mnandi though.

Chiro75, carry what you want though when it is your practice. Chances are you will not be opening it in front of your patients all that much. Carry a Micra for those moments when the sheeple are watching.

I don't like the tactical look when I'm dressed up, and while the Case knives are nice, I'd like to have something really special to carry on occasion, such as a Reeve or William Henry or something like that. If I could figure out how to make folders, I would just make something for myself, but as is I am pretty much limited to fixed blades.

I'm new to the CRK's but have a small standard (just got today :D ) and a large Classic with a G2 sheath.

I have an CGG Aztec Umfaan on the way. I plan to make a kydex rig for each but I heard one member mention that he carries his Umfaan in a William Henry pocket pouch, which has a clip. Sounded like a real good idea and I'll probably order one of those as well.

Nothing wrong with having accessories, my wife does it :D

IMHO the small Sebenza is likely the most useful, practical "working" knife a professionally dressed person can carry. I have the large and the small (both plain) and prefer the large but clothing and sheeple environs cause me to carry the small more often ... and I rarely feel underknifed. You will like the small. Trust me on this one.:)

i carry a small plain seb daily or a small carson model 4 to the office and to the hospital :D....i rarely get a second glance or frown when i pull it out to use it but then again my second knife (hidden under my white coat) is either a dozier personal utility in a custom iwb sheath by david hatch (this is the guy who makes all of pat crawford's sheaths) or a mean street also in a belt carry kydex sheath by mr hatch or a crawford kasper fixed blade....the office and hospital staff are now used to me using a blade for its intended use and dont lose it even when i produce a fixed blade....whether you choose a small seb or a mnandi or an umfaan you cant go wrong...its a matter of personal preference...feverdoc

You know, Chiro, with your knifemaking abilities, you could put custom/presentation grade scales on any number of manufactured knives, and make it look very special. Not sure which forum I saw it on, but last night, saw a CRKT M16-10Z (I think) that the owner had a friend replace the scales with beautiful olivewood, and then sanded the blade to a high shine, ending up looking terrific.

Just a thought, but it seems a shame to not use your abilities. I'm sure a small Sebbie would do very well by you, but wouldn't have the level of individuality you yourself could provide.

Well, I did manage to even make a REKAT Pioneer (1st generation, no less) look pretty by replacing the G-10 with purple heart scales. Looked nice and the scales were thock, so they had a lot of contour. If I could figure out how to make a folder, even if it were just a friction folder, I would gladly carry my own stuff day in and day out! Although, half the fun of making knives is seeing other people's work and playing around with it!

It would appear that the small sebbie is the most popular choice. I still say go large, but I do live in a rural area that doesn't give a second glance to a 3.5" blade. Even the kids in my classroom have gotten used to their teacher using a large pocketknife and don't give it a second thought!

The main point here is, YOU CAN'T GO WRONG WITH A SEBENZA! LARGE OR
small.

I'm in the same boat as artsig1. I live in a rural area and carry a large Sebenza. Nobody around here ever gives it a second glance.

I don't think I could ever live in an area where people ran for the hills when my knife came out. Hmmmm...... I guess that means I already live in the hills. :)

The bottom line is, if you can carry a large Sebenza and get away with it, go for it. The large Seb is very good at small cutting chores, which many large folders aren't. And you still get the advantage of being able to tackle larger jobs.

The reason I was/am leaning toward the smaller knives is twofold:
1) I want a small pocket knife for dress-up.
2) My daily cutting chores are basically opening mail and packages and cleaning my fingernails. I am not a heavy knife user unless I look for a project to do like that. My usual folder carry is either a BM Pinnacle or Wegner, and although I don't whip them out in front of people, I doubt anybody has ever even noticed I carry them. I just personally do not like the look of a professional having a folder clip in his pocket or a knife on his belt. I am very particular about my personal appearance in my office. I could care less about sheeple, I just don't like the incongruity for myself.

chiro you cant judge a book by its cover or so i am told....i wear a very nice tie/shirt and pants to the office and hospital daily....a significant number of the docs i work with in a major medical center in memphis have all sorts of goodies under their coat....the white coat is an excellent cover gartment although it was not its original intended purpose....i NEVER let my goodies show under my coat unless i have to use them and then i only produce them from the side slits as needed....on saturdays its kinda funny as a group of us often go shooting at the range after rounds and none of us want to leave our pistols in the car/truck/suv-so many times i will be with six or seven docs in the icu who have on their concealed carry rigs under their coats and no one is the wiser except for us in the know who are about to head out to the range...now if you choose to practice without a white coat on or in scrubs you can make the necessary adjustments and still carry a reeve folder iwb right next to your pager and it will disppear like magic.....i have even run codes in the icu with scrubs on and the pager holder did a fine job camoflaging the clip on my seb.....i agree its important to look professional but dont let it become an obsession as i let it do to me when i first started out....after literally tens of thousands of patients and patient's families i have found a good bedside manner and good manners will take you farther than a nice tie and white coat..i ought to know as the families of dying patients whose life was saved were more impressed that i came rushing to the hospital from the trout stream in full regalia or from the deer stand in camo to see their loved one through their sickness than going home first to put on a nice fresh professional look....they were able to see i was human and didnt need to hide behind a facade of a white coat...just my .02 cents worth...feverdoc
