If you make or carry knives, YOU could go to jail!!!

Some folks are putting down emailing like it won't work. I've had personal replies not form letters from my Congressman and my Senator from emails. If emailing is the most convenient way you'll write, or the only way you'll do it then please do so.

In my experience it does too work but Daryl is correct. No matter which method you use, be it snail mail, email, or phone, be polite, be professional but also be firm trying to be direct and to the point.

^^ And always back up your thoughts. Don't just say "Don't ban assisted openers" and instead say something to this effect "Assisted opening knives are not switchblades, as they do not have a button on the handle to release a spring loaded blade, so they should not be banned."

In Indiana, the state house and senators have email addresses like h1@in.gov all the way to h100@in.gov and then the state senators have s1@in.gov to s50@in.gov, if your states have the same setup, that would help you guys to mass email your states.

Darrel, When dealing with this current enemy, er administration we need to think like them. They could care less about what white males want or need. But if it concerns the disabled or veterans they will pay attention. A great many americans disabled and disabled vets rely on one hand openers, That's the way to get Washington and politicians attention. we need to alert all these organizations and get thier lobby folks to protest this end run around the constitution.

The assisted openers would be tough to defend imo. The difference between pushing a button in a little bit and having a blade pop out and pushing a thumbstud a little bit is not much.

I am hoping we can see some backing from the NRA on this. Even though they have there own issues to worry about they have been working with Benchmade for some time and I would hope they can see that this agenda affects there cause as well. I am going to make a few calls to people I know in the NRA. Any help we can rally is help we need!

The bigger risk here is that once Customs and Border Security gets this in place, the Federal government may try to close the non-interstate commerce "loophole" on "switchblades." The immediate impact of this current proposal would be that you could no longer mail or ship assisted openers even if they remain legal in the "several states" because the Postal Regs already prohibit such shipment except between FFL holders. This also does not bode well for the attempt to have assisted openers not classified as "switchblades" in places like Texas. It is never too late to remind the politicians that current switchblade laws had less to do with "ground truth" back in the 50's and more to do with their use in Marlon Brando biker movies. Remember that when these knives were "outlawed" you could still walk into your local hardware store and buy pretty much anything short of a tommy gun with nary an ID check. We have conveniently cleaned up most of our rhetoric post 1964 or so, but also remember that there was a heavy racial/ethnic component to passing these types of laws. From what I have read, the infamous "Saturday night specials" were called that because the old names such as "Ni***town Special" could not be used in polite conversation.
It might be humorous for me to that thank God I make huge, intimidating bowie knives instead of these evil assisted switchblades, but I don't think that I would fall into the conspiracy theory nutbag category when I say that this could be the first shot in the current Administration's post Heller counterattack on the "weapons" industry.

Customs denied the extension folks. It is amazing that the answer is not due until the 21st of June.
What does this say to you?
This is serious!

Email and write the customs people, your congressperson and senators TODAY!
Your help is needed.
Donate even $2.00 to the papal account at AKTI.

In some countries, you cannot own a fixed blade knife either.
No one is exempt here.
This is the beginning of ......????

My senators, congresswoman have been contacted and the letter to usc&bp is off.
Contribution to mike is next.

It is astonishing that some people are doing such things when times are so difficult; and that they don't give a shit if they risk eliminating even more jobs, shutting down even more companies, and adding the expense of sending even more people through the courts due to a rediculous law.

Oh, well; it is not THEIR job that is lost or THEIR company.... so, no big deal, eh?

I've sent my emails/letters to the appropriate folks and will continue to do so. Please sign up with AKTI and/or KnifeRights, gents! Much like the NRA has proven, there is strength in numbers. This issue threatens our livelihood and basic human rights.

Yeah, this is a serious issue. I've sent the letters not just to the reps from my district but to every member of Congress from Iowa. I'll follow up with phone calls this week, and send email as well.

Contacting senators/representatives via email does work! They've gotten to know me over the years, and I too get personal responses back from email now (didn't initially, perhaps that was before email was considered a legitimate form of communication).

But when it really matters like NOW, a paper letter is best. In terms of the attention that your reps give to constituent communication, I've always heard that a letter is highest priority, a phone call next, and email last. It's because of the relative effort involved; your representatives know that it takes more time and effort to prepare a snailmail letter, so they understand that you feel more strongly about that issue, and give it correspondingly more weight. The very best thing you can do is show up in their office when they're in town! :D

Sometimes we overlook how fortunate we are to live in a democracy. We take it so much for granted that we don't take advantage of it. Please, anyone who hasn't taken the time to look up the address for their Congress members, just do it and fire off the letter. Then give them a call to tell them about the letter, and then just for good measure summarize the whole thing in an email. That's my plan anyway.

Seems like everything I get into gets attacked soon after :grumpy:. I did not know we had an "issue" with the 4th circuit (or so) supreme court down here until recently, I think the rat ba$^ards should be hanged. Now this! My CBP letter is sent, as are emails to Sens/Legislator. And joined kniferights.org, and...Sen. Kay B. Hutchison (R-Tex) has been a good friend to the 2nd Amendment for a while, but she is leaving the Senate...my recent letter from Sen. John Cornyn indicates he supports 2nd Amendment, too, not sure about knives...

Thanks,
Brian K.

I haven't read every word of this thread, but there's an extremely important point I don't see addressed with our elected legislators.

The C&BP ruling DIRECTLY overrides their work and their laws. If Congress and the several states allow this to stand, it sets yet another precedent of allowing an unmanaged and unmanageable agency to defy the properly legislated laws of our land.

As much as I love my blades, that precedent scares me far more than losing the right to carry my knife does.
