If you only had $200, what scope would you put on a....

Well put and observations I would never of thought of as far as using low/medium mounts.
As far as my thoughts regarding the flat shooting of the .243, how far would she shoot flat with a 100 grain bullet? I have yet to find out. I'm still putting it all together as you know. I figure I'll go with the VX1 3-9X40 even though it doesn't have the little marks on the crosshairs. If I never take a shot further than ?, I would never need them. Right?

Thanks. Fishiker, I always wanted Leupold. MADE IN AMERICA!

I haven't check for quite awhile, but you have always been able to send Leupold scopes in and the would change reticles if you wanted something different. IIRC it didn't use to be very expensive.

You can get the VX1 3-9X40 with a couple of dots for long range shooting. It costs about $50 extra if you know where to look. ($250) IMHO, unless you think they you would take shots over 300 yards, you don't really need it.

For $200 I'd be looking through a few side by side and probably choose a Vortex Diamondback. 1" Tube, 4-12x40 with a BDC reticle. I prefer the Vortex reticle to the Nikon P-series fat lines and dots and I have more than one of those. YMMV. Redfield is an interesting choice now, but I don't have experience with their glass so I can't comment other than I thought they were on par with VX-1 glass. I'd still probably go with Vortex with what I know.

You remind me of me. I buy things two ways. I go to a store and buy the first thing that I see OR I spend months driving myself nuts researching and reading specs and reviews.

UffDa -- you nailed me! Usually I buy the wrong thing and end up returning it and then Google the crap out of everything left.

I will say, I've picked up some very nice pointers here. Things I would not of thought of. I love this place a most everybody here. You guys are great!

Is it true what one guy told me that you're scope is mounted correctly if you can pass a dollar bill between it and the barrel?

If you can pull the rifle up to your shoulder, and not have to move your head around in order to see through the scope, it is mounted correctly.

I heard that if you have a dollar bill left in your wallet to conduct such a test you didn't buy a good enough scope. :)

Damn ya! Touche! Kinda like my old man. Mom passed first then Dad about 8 years later. Dad wouldn't hardly spend a dime on himself. We kept trying and trying to get him to do crap and go places. He'd always say, I want to be able to leave something for you kids and the grandkids. I said Dad, if you could bounce the check to the undertaker, you've got things figured out pretty close.

Ok everybody bear with me here, especially you UffDa! I'm a gonna do a little poll. I'm going to take the first 10 responses.

The choices are, in no particular order:

Leupold LX1 3-9x40
Vortex Diamondback 4-12x40
Crossfire 2 4-12x40

Don't overlook the Crossfire 2 4-12x40.

I know on paper that the Diamondback is a "better" scope, but the FOV appears much wider on the CF2 compared to the Diamondback and the clarity is very close to the same. I sell a lot more Crossfires than the Diamondbacks for that reason

Remember, this is going on a Howa 1500 .243

I'm voting for the Leupold, but I don't have any experience with the Vortex so I can't vote for it. I've been using Leupolds for years and have yet to have one fail and I primarily use harder recoiling large bore rifles (hence the user name :D ) and primarily hunted elk in weather and terrain that was very rough on equipment.

Damn you M67. Alright, I'll amend the poll to add this scope to the mix. BUT THIS IS IT! If I add anything else, UffDa is going to start a petition to have me kicked out or something. :) (love you brother)

My Vortex Crossfire II is as good or better than my Diamondback and is by far the best bang for the buck scope that I have owned, so obviously that is my vote but all three of the finalists are great choices IMO.

Call off the dogs, the hunt is over. I was at our local Field & Stream just looking and I ran across a 40% off sale. To make a long and somewhat boring story short, I bought a Leopold VX 2 3-9x40mm CDS for 40% off. Brand new in the box. Right or wrong, good or bad, I'm done. Now, how'd I do?

 Nothing more to say. :D
