If you owned a knife shop and could only sell...

they had better be worth lots of money if you can sell only 5 knives. What will you sell after you sell the 5? :p

Okay, not the best way to ask the question. I meant 5 models and only those models, and as many of them as you needed. What are the top 5 best selling knives?

I got the question, I was just being facetious.

Who cares? They are unlikely to be knives I would desire to own.
The really good knives don't sell like hotcakes.

So you would be selling 5 different chinese cheapies, most likely. The best quality knife you would be able to stock with that premise, would be a SAK or Buck.

Gosh thats a fine looking knife in your sig line Rat.
I know you have been asked about it before, and I know its rare, but damn, thats one fine looking knife.

Uh... me. That's why I'm asking.

What if I was targeting the bladeforums community? It would seem like Benchmade, Spyderco, SAK and Kershaw may be the way to go. Possibly Cold Steel.

This is a real bummer of a question. The fact of the matter here in my town is that the local gunshop couldn't sell good knives, and has resorted to only ordering and selling crap knives. It seems they were selling 20-30 junk knives for every benchmade or cold steel they sold. And even those aren't the greatest knives.
So to stay in business, you'd have to sell junk.

I wonder how many guys who frequent gun shops wouldn't be caught dead with a Hi Point, but have a Chinese junk folder clipped to their pockets.

The "who cares" was a rhetorical statement. The question is flawed. There is no way to maintain any store if you only have 5 knives for sale. Even carrying only 5 Brands of knives would likely be insufficient. An online store needs a huge selection to compete as well. Show me a knife store that sells less than 10 brands.

If you wanted to know what the 5 most commonly purchased knives/brands among the members are, then you should have just asked that in the first place. The best selling knives out there are complete crap by any standard.

Okay, I'll give it a shot:

  1. Spyderco Delica
  2. Victorinox Spartan
  3. Buck 110
  4. Leatherman Wave (or whatever replaced the PST)
  5. Something Gerber, maybe the AR3

Not my favorite knives but I think they'll sell well.

I feel sorry for you ignoramus beacuse nobody is posting on your thread.
If you mean what are my five favorite folders, I will give you 2.
Endura and Delica because they were the first folders that got me into collecting and I view them as nearly perfect folders.

Good luck with your thread.

Let's see,
1. The sword of the Centurian that oversaw the crucifixion of Jesus.
2. Cain's flint: the first knife ever.
3. The dagger Brutus used to kill Caesar.
4. Bill Moran's first knife, ever.
5. The OSS dagger that killed Hitler (shhhhhhh).

You could probably buy a house with that cash!

1.Spyderco-Quality steel, innovative designs, they changed the knife world.
2.Benchmade-Name synonomous with quality. Wide range of styles and steels.
3.Kershaw-Ken Onion designs are big sellers
4.Case-Not a huge Case fan but you need a slipjoint line for the traditionalists and they have one of the most recognizable names out there. Huge array of styles and handles available.
5.CRKT-My heart says William-Henry or Bark River but common sense says CRKT - Because blade steel isn't much of a consideration to the average guy on the street.

The question wasn't about the plausibility of maintaining a store on 5 knives alone. I was trying to get a certain type of result and probably came up with the dumbest way to ask for it. I'm responding to your posts since you find it important enough to tell me how stupid my question is.

You must have rub-it-in-your-face syndrome. I already asked for the top 5 best selling knives after acknowledging that my question was flawed. What's the big deal? You must be pretty hard on yourself when you make a mistake.

You know, my brother- who is an idiot by the way- is into Balisongs (though he wouldn't know that name if you used it in front of him), and carries some crappy flea-market CCC. I remember him showing it to me very proudly, as if after having seen some really nice Balis I'd be impressed. When I pointed out that he should get a better knife, and I could suggest a good one for around $140-$160, he said that it was silly to pay that much for a knife and it would take away from his AR15 fund. What an @$$...
