If You Snooze You Lose... New 72 or 73?

Hi Folks,

Been primarily a lurker here for quite a while.

Some time ago I posted asking about the 72/73. At that time I couldn't find anything that I wanted. Just noticed that at least one of our dealers has the recently-released 73s for sale. In the past I've dragged my feet on a couple of models and...well, they were gone in a flash.

There's a single blade 73 in cocobolo that looks nice. However, does anyone know what kinds of scales/handles the 72s will have. Also, the only difference I see is the 72 is 1/8 longer. Also, I think the 72 is a lock back and was wondering if all 72s come with a lanyard hole.

Thanks for any comments, thoughts, or suggestions.

Regards,

George

Just FYI there is a the older version of both the #72 and #73 for sale in the exchange section right now......

I got two #73s in today. Here is one of them.

This one locks up very tight. Tighter than any of my other linerlocks I've had from GEC. Fit and finish are first rate. The ebony covers are very nicely done.

The second #73 I got in today locks up very tight too. Everything on it is the same as the one pictured.

Here's a 72 I grabbed on the for sale forum last week. Very nice in the hand with burnt stag.

Regards

Robin

The factory has a schedule HERE. But many times they don't get around to updating it. Also they will move things around, so it is fairly dynamic. We also try and keep a schedule out as far as we can. Others also have started keeping schedules in starting their own Early Reserve system; but schedules rarely match as it is sometimes hard to keep up.

You should notice the lanyard thongs showing up on a schedule as "tube" or with a "T" qualifier on the the model number itself (for example "735113T" instead of "735113") on models that have been made both ways. But they have not been putting the "T" on the 72LB's as they have all had thongs to date, per the design. Thus the 72's will have tubes.

Thanks all for your help.....

Bob and Mike, thanks for the "from the dealers' information."

Robin and Ed, thanks for the great photos.

I think I'm going to wait for the new 72s to arrive.

Regards,

George

The #72s are nice George. I just may order one or two when they come out. You certainly can't go wrong by waiting for them to come out.

Very nice! I love the ebony, but I also love deeper cut swedges and long pulls...... I really wanted a northfield version in ebony. I opted for the antique green jig, these tidioute are very nice though.... I predict an empty wallet in my future.

Concerning the Difference between the 72 and 73, I love my 73's and 72, and the spear blade is nice because it can be pinched and even opened with one hand. GEC makes a fine lockback as well. The 72 has no half stops and opens very smoothly. I would vote that you buy both..:D

72 in antique yellow jig... the spear blade fills the pocket a lil bit...

The 73 is nice and slim.. both great knives, be sure to post some pics of whatever you pick up!

Guys 'n' gals, the 73's are out, but only 25 of each blade config./handle material. I have a feeling they will not last long. The Northfield Antique Green Bone are the first NF's made featuring this color bone, and it is very pretty.

Now I'm even more excited. Is anybody else looking forward to the new run of Northfield 72s?

Sure am, have a stag and jigged bone reserved in clip point. I have an earlier #72 wharnie and with what I have seen coming from GEC lately I am predicting these will be even better executed than the earlier runs. Same for the upcoming #42's.

Just ordered a clip blade Northfield 72LB in antique green bone.
The Wharncliffe model is tempting me as well but the blade seems to sit a bit proud in the closed position and I wish they had a long pull as they did on the previous run in ebony. Still not sure if I will be able to resist one.
