If You Snooze You Lose... New 72 or 73?

The proud position of the Wharnie blade when closed on the 72s is the main thing that keeps me from wanting one. When closed, the wharnie 72s look almost just like the spearpoint 72s when closed.

Hi Folks,

I was just getting ready to order one of the Wharnies; however, want a blade that fits "comfortably" and doesn't "stick up." Sorry, don't know the proper knife terms.

Anyone know where I can see a photo of the knives closed?

Thanks so much.

Regards,

George

edit: Gunstockjack, a few comments up, posted a really neat looking #73. Nice looking knife. I'm assuming that it has a drop point blade?? Would one of the new 72s with a clip blade look like that, the way it fits in the knife when closed?

George, I know a dealer that posts a wide range of photos with each GEC knife that they sell. They are not a BF dealer to my knowledge. I tried to PM you but it won't go through because of your registration type. :(

Thanks PMEW,

I found a site that shows the knives closed. All the knives had drop point blades which fit nicely in the knife when closed. Would a clip blade fit as well?

BTW, there's city in Scotland that has my last name......edit: (Maybe I should say, My last name is the same as a city in Scotland) and I have a lifetime lease for a square foot of land on Isle of Islay, courtesy of Laphroaig.

Regards and thanks......

George

Here is a link to a thread here on bladeforums that I was looking at to get an idea of how the knives would look closed. The knives are from a previous years run of the 72s but should give you a good comparision of how the clip and Wharnie blades look open and closed.

Also here is an in production picture from the current run of a Wharnie in the closed position

Pistons,

Thanks so much for the link. Actually, I guess I can now see why the Wharnie blade sticks up or rides high. Greatly appreciate the link.

What a great forum. Thanks for all of the great information and comments.

Just ordered a green bone NF w/clip.

Thanks again,

George

I just ordered my 72 ebony wharnie. Very excited to get this knife. This particular pattern and blade choice is one of the first GEC knives I wanted back when I first started buying traditional. Of course they were sold out everywhere. Glad they decided to make another run ~

I filed the kick on my 72 spearpoint to close the profile a bit. It didn't take much and carries much better now.

I'm more of a wood cover guy myself, but that green bone looks fantastic on the new run of 72s. I noticed that the green bone 72s with clip blades were the first to sell out on CK.net. If I were going to get a Wharnie 72, it would probably be the green bone one. I noticed that there seems to be more Wharncliffe 72s available than the others, but I'm not sure of exact numbers. I was told that there were only 25 each of the Ebony wood 72s made this round! :D

I really like the jigging on this green bone. I should have picked one up with a clip blade!

The green bone sure is nice but the stag versions are what really get me. As close to my ideal carry as I have seen. Eagerly anticipating its arrival!

Now I'm even more excited. Is anybody else looking forward to the new run of Northfield 72s?

I received my 73 in cocobolo last week, and it is beautiful, but a bit tough to open. I may end up selling it. I ordered the wharncliffe 72 in the picture above, and it shipped today. I should have it Friday the 30th. Should be easier to open. The cocobolo on my 73 is beautiful:

That is a sweet looking 73, manowar! Very nice cocobolo. I have the clip blade 72 in cocobolo on it's way.

The Stags look great. I wish they did some without the shield though. I think stag covers look better without the shield.

I've got both the #72 Lockback and the #73 Linerlock in now - both with Ebony covers. I prefer the #73's blade.

Nice! I pefer the 73 blade as well. Are the #73 linerlocks as hard to open as the slippies? I'm thinking that the swedge and the long pull on my Northfield cocobolo 73 is contributing the "tough to open factor". The swedge comes down past the nail groove on top, which gives you a shallower groove, so there's less to grab the thumbnail. Can't quite see in the photo, but it looks like there is no swedge on the Tidioute #73, so the nail nick should be full depth.

Yes, the #73 Linerlock has a hard pull. You may be right about the swedge and long pull interfering with each other but I'd urge you to try to work with the knife and try to use it. It would be a shame for you to sell it. It is a beautiful knife - outstanding covers. It should become easier to open with use and of course a drop of oil in the joint/joints. There is no swedge on the Tidioute models.

Bought a 73 single blade last week in antique green bone. Love the deep chunky jigging.

The pull is surprisingly strong. I have Scouts from 2007 that aren't this strong.

Blade is nice and centered with no play. Sharpness was great as well. Hair shaving. A rarity for a new GEC.
