I think 3,25 - 3,75 inches closed is a great size for EDC. Smaller or bigger ones are not bad, for sure. But this is the size-frame I prefer on my EDCs.
I think I could suffice with at least a jack knife preferably my Gec 56 dogleg in ivory bone but I don't feel skilled enough for peanuts and smaller pen knives yet, but as my quest for minimalism furthers I may work up to one but as of now I don't feel comfortable with anything smaller than a jack.
I have been partial to a a Case slimline trapper since 1974; I would consider a full size trapper for the heft. It would be a hard choice to make if it got down to brass tacks.
Well I've been carrying my Case Peanut for almost a year now and I still love it. I'm confident that I'll be able to carry this knife for the rest of my life. I have a bunch of knives, but I always carry this one.
I guess it would have to be Peanut sized up to 3 1/2" closed. I have 3 in mind, the Peanut, SBJ and a Cripple Creek single blade (spear) Barlow. I have carried each for extended periods and have always been happy. The only hard part was just picking one and leaving the others in the drawer. If I need more knife than that, I would be hurting something that is only a bit bigger in my collection and not necessary.
That's just "Gone Jeepin's" way of describing his preference. We got what he meant. This is suppose to be a fun thread not a technical, text book, thread.
The only requirement I asked for was that the knife selected be a folding knife with the stipulation as to how long a closed lenght is preferred.
i was asking because i wasnt sure if he realized the medium jack was a big peanut
OR asking if perhaps there, was a difference between them (other than size) that i was unaware of...
I mostly carry knives that are 3 1/2" to 3 5/8" or a 3 1/4 stockman
But if I was only one knife I would carry a 4" Stockman
All the blades are big enough to work by themselves
and the knife is big enough to have a 4 finger hold comfortable for long use
Which one?
A Queen in Amber Bone and D2
Queen packs bigger blades than both my Buck and my Boker
And the way D2 holds an edge
It was work but now those blades are awesome.
Queen's blunt blades forces you to sharpen the knife towhere you want them to be
End of statement!!
I went on a trip for work and was without my knives for a week. When I returned, my Buck 309 seemed BIG. I know Carl's friend carried one for many years and it served most of his needs. For EDC stuff, like opening boxes and plastic bags, the 309 is perfectly adequate.
That GEC Bullnose is just about perfect. 3 inch blade, 3.75 closed length. Just about perfect EDC blade length and perfectly comfortable in my hands (I have smallish hands and can get a full grip around it).
