Okay, maybe whats left of my mind has been influenced by the insane reality shows but...

If you were going to be dropped off on one coast with no money (California or east coast) and the object was to get to the other coast by hook or by crook, what two traditional pocket knives would you stick in your pants before leaving. Oh, you also have two weeks for the trip, so that includes time to get a job at a car wash or day labor at constuction sites, or something and get some money for a bus ticket. In the meantime you're on the bum, like Bogy in the begining of "Treasure Of The Sierra Madre."

Uses would include food prossesing, making rude shelter under overpasses with cardboard boxes, figure 4 deadfalls, what ever.

Consider this kind of a brain teaser.:D

That would be a hard call... Only picking two for the trip, I think the rest of them would have their feelings hurt getting left at home :D...
I would say it would be my old Case peanut and probably one of my Case Copperlocks...

Hmmm, 2 traditionals for 2 weeks?

One would be a Hobo, for sure.

Mike

Mike took the words right off me tong with that one..

Yes, my Case hobo in the pack and my vintage Vic Officer(I think thats the pattern name). She has got the sharpest tools on her, especially the saw!:)

This is a great real life scenario to ponder.

most likely a vic farmer because it's so useful and a Boker Copperhead or a Case yellow trapper to keep it traditional.

Vic Farmer and a Schrade 8OT Stockman.

Just be sure to drop me off on the coast of Oahu or Cozumel. :p

This is just plain hard. The time limit makes it a bit easier, but not that much. To make things easier on myself, I'll stick to the ones I have. Otherwise my brain would shut down from all the choices. I'm also assuming that since you were inspired by Reality TV, a camera crew would be following us around.

I'd want one to be some sort of scout/camp knife. Deciding that much was easy. The hard part is deciding which one. A saw would be nice, but since the contest has a two week time limit, anything I'm going to build is going to be very temporary. That still leaves me stuck deciding between three: my grandfather's Case 640045 R, my Vic. Explorer and my Imperial Super Kamp-King. Assuming the camera crew will also be providing any first aid that may be required, I'll drop the Explorer. Even though the Case is part of my current EDC, I think I'll go with the Imperial. It has every thing the Case does, plus a pen blade and a Beverage Can-Opener. I like the Beverage Can-Opener for large cans of V8. Not the greatest of reasons, but its late and I'm sleepy.

My second knife would be my Imperial Frontier two blade folding hunter. I like larger folders for food prep. Its also one of the most comfortable knives I own. That would make heavier work, such as shelter building, less fatiguing on my hand.

Are we allowed other gear as well or just the two knives? And if we are, does it have to be traditional as well? For instance, a Zippo would be an acceptable lighter, but a Bic wouldn't. Please tell me that I'm at least allowed a hat. Making one travel across the country with out a hat would just be uncivilized.

boker large stockman and a vic farmer....although could probably get by with either one, and use the extra space for a zippo

I'll go with my Vic Super Tinker and....... hmmmmmm........ my Soddie Jr. No, wait, my Peanut. Yes, that's it, my Vic and my Peanut. I'm pretty much covered there.

That is a tough one. I think I would go with my old carbon steel Ulster scout knife. I payed 50 cents for it a couple years ago at a flea market. It was covered with rust and in bad need of a good cleaning. For the past month it has been my edc, and I love it. I would also take my older two blade case folding hunter with CV blades. With that combination plus the other pocket stuff I carry I could improvise my lights, cooking equipment, shelter, butcher road kill where there is roadkill to be found, and take care of most other challenges i may face. Plus I doubt the old ulster would scare any one or raise any eyebrows. Joe

I would never make you travel without your hat, sir! I totally agree that going without a hat would be uncivilized. Even though I have a full head of hair, I would never leave the house without my hat. You may wear whatever head covering you wish. As for lighter, carry what you wish. I carried the same Zippo or 35 years, but have only in the past year phased it out for a Bic. I finally got tired of it running out of fuel at inoportune times, or leavng a red burn splotch on my leg when I try to put too much fuel in it. At least with a white or yellow bic I can see easiely how much fuel is left.

This all comes from a conversation a friend and were having last night, if we were dropped off with just what was in our pockets, could we make our way home? Dan and I are of the same generation, and maybe used to doing with a little less, and we were razzing his nephew a bit. His nephew is 30 something, and a product of his age, used to luxuries and easy life. One thing lead to another, and we thought of how we would fare being on the bum with no money, far from home, with nothing but our edc pocket stuff. While Dan and I were discussing how to build temporary shelters and where to get day labor jobs, his nephews solutions were to call home to mom and dad and get them to send him money.

Our only stumbling block was knives. We couldn't make up our minds on which knives to take. Dan, like me, is a knife knut and has a good accumulation. We decieded we had to have two, one as a back up. Far from home and no money equiptment failure was too risky and a knife too important. Also we thought about police. Being on the bum, we wanted to stay low profile, and in case of a vagrancy shake down, did not want anything illegal on us in the way of large cutlery.

It was an interesting conversation, that led to me and Dan to halfway consider trying it next summer. Two old farts not quite ready for the lap blanket and rocking chair yet. One last adventure before settling down on the porch. Needless to say, the ladies ain't happy with that talk.:D

Two traditionals? The more I think about it, the more it seems almost redundant in a way. I mean, the goal as I see it is that the pair you choose should be complimentary, (i.e. one does something well that the other doesn't) but the functional differences between, say, a congress, canoe, trapper or jack and a stockman are quite small really. I like to edc a stockman or canoe so I don't have to carry a second knife. I think it comes down more to size differences than anything, so my choice for maximum versatility would be either a medium to large stockman or scout-type, and large 2-blade hunter.
