If you were going to spend 4-5 hundred on a knife, what would you get?

If I was considering spending half a grand on a knife, my wife would find me a psychiatrist. If you tear that knife up or loose it hiking/camping/hunting, you might be needing one too. :D

I'd hope that you would take care of anything you spend your hard earned money on. Theres no reason why a 500$ knife should be lost or destroyed while camping, just as you would not worry about losing your 400$ camera that is smaller and more fragile. Why? Because you take care of your stuff. many people who only buy 30$ knives and treat them like 30$ knives can't imagine actually caring for their blades.

My 400-500 dollar 'to buy' and 'have bought' list:

Chris Reeve Large Classic Sebenza
Strider SMF Gen 2
Rick Hinderer Firetac

I would order a single blade trapper from Don Morrow.

I dont own any expensive knife yet. But I think I would take Strider SMF/SNG,Large Sebenza with some inlay/graphic or without. Maybe some custom knife. ;)

Rick Hinderer!

You can't go wrong with one of his folders. I'm really digging the new XM18 model. So solid, so smooth, it'll be the last folder you will ever need*.

* Notice I said 'need' and not 'want'. :D

I'd look at Mike Obenauf, Kirby Lambert, John W Smith and Greg Lightfoot- all make great folders.

I'd pick up a William Henry with ZDP-189 and damascus blade with Titanium frame. There are a few models, and I'm not sure which one it would be.

I really like the Scott Cook Lochsa too, but what is the wait on one?

2-3 years isn't it?

My statement was made in jest. I care for all my knives, regardless of cost. However, accidents do happen. I've seen scopes smashed, stocks broke, equipment dropped in deep water. These things happen, just as arms and legs get broke. I don't mind scratching up the blade of a production knife. Most of my firearms have scratches from brush and other things. However, custom knives (like custom firearms) are works of art even if they aren't embellished. I admire them. I wish I owned a few of them. But take them to the woods, and they will soon cease to be quite so pretty. It almost seems a shame. Note, I said "almost". Knives are tools and they are meant to be used. For myself, that would be tough to do unless I bought an "ugly" custom knife that looked like a Busse. Truth be told, I bet most of the people here who buy custom knives don't take them to the field. I could be wrong. I hope I'm wrong. But I suspect I'm not.

To add: If you're looking for traditional knives, you can't do any better really than Don Morrow. Its like getting a Shadley at a discount- and Don's knives will very soon command Shadley's prices so get while the getting is good.

As to the Carson idea: If you can FIND a carson for $500 then don't hesitate to pull the trigger. He makes a technically perfect folder and his stuff is always good on the resale. Also, if you can find a Burke for around $500 then I'd get that as well. His knives have been going for about a grand lately and they're pretty nice.

Still, I'd go with RJ.

As for babying your customs, is there anything more sad that someone who can point to a mint knife and say "You know I could have done *insert activity here* with that knife and it would have been great!"

I emailed Bob Lum about a Chinese folder, and it was the same thing. 2 1/2 years.

I collect/use some of the customs I have.Of course there are some I would never use.
Collectors would like to acquire knives for their collections, new from the maker or as "mint"/pristine as possible,IMO.:)
That is my impression why collectors take care of their knives.

I loaned a John Fitch hunter, desert ironwood handle to a bud last deer season. He scored an 8-point.
The knife is fine.

Doug:)
