If you were going to (try to) build a belt grinder, would you design it to use 2x72 belts? Seems as if the belts are available in more grits at that size, but I recall reading somewhere that the longer belts are more cost-effective. Whats your advice?

Its possible to build in the flexibility to be able to use any size belt (within reason) but 2x72 is going to be the popular size.

Im in a the middle of doing a Grinder in a Box build and a longer arm is all thats needed. They (Polar Bear Forge) show it with a 60", 72" and 90" belt

2x72 is the knifemakers standard. It will give you the best selection of belts, that are easy to find, and cost effective. I did build my own, and built a 2x72 for these reasons.
