If you were to send your fixed blades out for a new edge...

...which knifemaker would you you choose? I've been considering sending a few fixed blades to a knifemaker to breathe some new life into them, by adding a new edge, but don't know who I'd choose to do it, or even if they would do it. As I understand it, Tom Krein will do this work, but who else and what's the typical cost of doing it?

richard_j...... :D

He's so good I feel like sending him some S125V and telling him it's 1095. ;)

Richard does amazon work with his paper wheels.

He is the only person I would trust to sharpen my blades on paper wheels.

Price depends on the blade, for full satin and stupid sharp zero edge it ran me less than $200.00, but thats for an FFBM. Just the edge only should be well under $100.00. The man does precision work and IMO redefines "sharp".
And one more, a Sarsquatch where he added a nice clip as well as full satin and zero edge.

RichardJ rebeveled my Superhawk Spyderco (Hawkbill blade) and put a sharper than factory edge on it for all of $3. His paper wheen set up is definately impressive stuff.

Edit to add that Tom Krein's edges are extremely impressive, but his turnaround due to how busy his shop is will definately be longer than Richard's. Richard had my knife in the mail back to me before I even knew it had arrived at his house. If you want a full regrind to a thinner over all knife shape (saber grind to Full Flat Grind for instance there is no better man then Tom Krein, and his edges are possibly the best ever 120 grit edges I've tried for sharpness,, but his turaround tims won be as quick as Ichard's due to the volum of work he has. I mailed my knife to Richard on Monday and had it back Friday, going priority mail each way. That is amazing speed, and Richard's edge was popping hairs and catching hairs above the skin nicely, so it was indeed very sharp. I've seen pics of his sharpening jobs splitting hairs as well, so for a buck an inch and super fast turnaround Richard will definately make you happy.

Last I checked Tom Krein's turn around was about a week and a half, but, you know it is going to be longer for any maker during the run up to Blade.

I put my full trust in Tom and feel comfortable sending him anything (read expensive knives), telling him what I want it to do then letting him loose..... and all for the low low price of $35 plus shipping.

My most recent regrind is a Strider GB that I had ground into an ARish leaf shaped blade. Tom removed a ton of steel and turned that glorified pry bar into a lightsabre and didn't hurt the HT one bit. The most important thing is that his geometries are off the charts good, you shouldn't be able to get an edge that thin AND that stable.

I've would suggest Mike Stewart at Bark River Knives. I've been very happy with my blades from him.

You'd be doing yourself a huge disservice by igoring a member here, Siguy. He's a young gent but does some really, really impressive work. He's popular in the Wilderness/Survival subforum. I've sent him a blade and it came back a whole other beast. He can also really work around your wants/needs (a full convex, reprofiling, basic sharpening, etc.). Hugely, hugely affordable too.

Are we talking about sharpening or a full regrind here? I thought it was simple sharpening. For regrinds I either own or have owned 10 Krein regrinds with 3 having edges as thin as .004"-.005" and the thickest being .010", all turned out perfect with unreal cutting ability and no ill effects to the heat treat. Krein regrinds are a service i will always swear by, and i have 2 more i am going to send in to him soon. I would send any full regrind in to him.

For regular sharpening, including rebeveling Richard gets a wicked edge, even rebevels to a much thinner angle if you want, and gets it out the same day he recieves it with a great edge. He did a superb job on my quite expensive Spyderco Superhawk. The edge turned out exactly how I wanted it and looked perfect as well. It was very sharp, the angle I wanted, and the turnaround time was unreal. You can't go wrong with Richard for sharpening, especially for the price he charges.

Tom Krein is an unbelivable sharpener, and I'm sure he will thin out an angle a bit as well, but due to his workload he just can't be as fast as Richard, though the knives certainly don't sit around his shop collecting dust. For just an edge sharpening I say you should give Richard a try, especially if you want your knife back as soon as humanly possible. You can't go wrong with Tom Krein for sharpening either, and I would trust no one else than Tom Krein to do a complete blade regrind. Both Richard and Tom are great guys and are as nice as you can get to talk to, and always have time for your questions on the phone. I just spoke to Tom Krein yesterday, and he is shipping out several of my regrinds (some are for a Blade Forums passaround) and 2 of his customs back to me today. I can't wait to see the magic he worked on my Spyderco Police 3 that he reground thinner and pointier for me.

I appreciate all the input. Looks like I'll be in touch with Richard and see what he can do with these knives. None are customs, all are production knives that either have seen or will see plenty of work. Thanks.

$100 , just to sharpen ? So then does it have to be resharpened by him each time it needs sharpened after that ?

Its more like $30.00-40.00, hence "well under $100.00". I have never sent him anything less than 7" (that I was charged for), so I can't speak for his pricing on smaller blades. Its a full convex edge when he's done, if you can sharpen a convex edge edge you can sharpen his convex edge. The steels I have had him work on for me are INFI and SR101, they get stropped after use whether they need it or not and have stayed scary sharp.

Here's a picture of a Ratweiler (7" blade) he did for me, the coating was left on so it should be easy to tell exactly how far he takes it. I hope this has helped.

Another vote for Simon AKA Siguy

Judging by richard j's video you can't go wrong with him either.

I need Richard's email address. His site doesn't seem to clearly have it or my eyes are getting worse. Thanks
