If your favorite knife that you own is in S30V and you came across one for sale in 20CV, would u buy it again to "upgrade" or not worth the $?

My favorite knife, that I carry with me everyday and has literally made me stop the search for something "better" is the Spyderco Kapara. I have the one in S30V. I really only care about edge retention and slicing, I don't beat on knives. I don't enjoy sharpening knives. My favorite small knife is my dragonfly 2 in ZDP189 that seems to remain sharp indefinitely, i love that about it.

Now lets say i find a DLT exclusive Kapara (in 20CV) for sale around $300. Not cheap. The regular S30V Kapara is $250. If you had your favorite knife, and it happened to be in S30V and ran you $240 at the time of purchase, would you jump on the chance to "upgrade" to a 20CV blade for another $300? Will there really be a noticeable upgrade in edge retention? I'm struggling with this. I have a sneaking suspicion that differences between steels are vastly blown out of proportion, but then again there's that dragonfly in ZDP189 that seems to never dull. What say you?

Depends what its for. m390 is less tough but has better edge retention. A tradeoff. In regular use I doubt you would notice much difference.

I personally love S30v in folders and I don’t see a need for an upgrade.
That being said, we don’t always purchase what we need. Since you are asking here tells me you want both knives, so if it is not a financial burden I say go for it.

No because a well worn knife is a beautiful thing, you worked for the "user's sheen"
so why replace it just because the other steel might be "better" at some sporadic tasks?
My only knife is a kershaw brawler which is in 8cr13mov, and I refuse to replace it. Because I want to see how far it can go, I just cut through the binding of 30 hardback books, no issues. So there Is no real reason to replace it for almost anything else that can pass for an upgrade. It's like chasing after a newer faster computer every year, I personally don't see the need/desire

Nah. To be honest, given the light type of use my knives get, I’m not sure I could tell the difference between D2 and MagnaCut. Maybe after a few more years of use and sharpening, but Larrin Thomas I surely ain’t. Even if I could, I wouldn’t replace or duplicate anything with one ‘super steel’ for the same thing with a newer super steel. There just isn’t enough difference between them to matter to me, other than to say I’ve got a knife with <insert arbitrary super steel here>.

I wouldn't buy it just for the steel "upgrade" if that's your only concern. However if it's one of your favorites and you want a backup I don't think picking up a special edition one would be totally unreasonable of you.
