If you've found "the one", have you kept "the others"?

Yes, but the only problem is that I always find a "new one" that does things better than the last one.

I stopped purchases and reduced the number of knives I have.

Folders:
Recon1 - stainless
K390 Delica - carbon

Small fixed blades:
Izula - carbon
CRKT Minimalist Spear Point - stainless

Big fixed blades:
3V AK-47 field knife
1095 ESEE 6

This pretty much covers it all.

Knives don’t care if you cheat on them and I wouldn’t have one if it did. I’ll keep as many as I want. 😝 I have several favorites for different occasions and usages. I just don’t see one knife covering everything. I usually carry at least two, sometimes three and have backup in my vehicle.

As you walk through the door, carrying your brand-new Sebenza, you notice your trusty Spyderco PM2 sitting on the couch. With a hint of jealousy, it glances at your new purchase and playfully asks, "Is that tape I see on your blade?"

Its heresy to even suggest such thing! My lord, have you lost your mind?!?!?! 😂

I've honestly lost count of how many times I've been asked this. Most recently by my wife, when I showed her the price of a De Villiers that I want.

My last couple purchases have been strictly collectibles. I put them in my pocket for the day sometimes, but my main reason for buying them was something other than everyday use.

If I'm going to collect, I want to collect with purpose, and this thread is part of trying to figure out what that purpose is. My "needs" are well taken care of, so there has to be some kind of philosophy behind my future purchases, more than just that I don't have that slightly different flavor of knife "X".

I think about this question quite a bit, the answer is always no. I keep some of the past ones. When I was a cyclist I owned about 10 bikes. Does a person need 10 bikes, no they do not. Now I have 3, but one is the "one" that does most everything I need. The other 2 are special purpose. So best case scenario for knives would be one folder and 2 fixed blades. One always needs a filet knife in addition to a good chefs knife, oh and a camping bushcraft fixed blade too, so make that 3 fixed blades. Folders maybe a little easier, my old Gerber FS1 is pretty close to perfect with a thumb stud affixed to it. But then I need a saltwater capable folder for my kayak life jacket, so now we are up to 5 minimum. Dont get me started on cars or watches either. Have you seen the documentary on R.W. Loveless where heopened his watch drawer, holy crap, there had to be over a dozen Rolexes in there. Then again he got Rolex money for his knives.

”The One?”
Yes, of course I’ve found it.
I’d have to say I’ve found it about 50 times now.
Exactly, I was going to say that every knife I’ve ever bought has been the one whether it be a folding or fixed blade knife.

Could I live with one knife?

Yes!

My Buck 121 I bought 44 years ago. Been there, done that-with it. 24-7-365!

I just happen to use and want more.

Do you have only one knife in your kitchen?

Didn't think so!

Anything else would be unacceptable you must keep them all !! But of course keep the rotation going to make room for others except for the “one” 😆

Yes and no.
Over many years I've gone from Buck and Gerber to Cold Steel to Sog to Kershaw/ZT and Benchmade to Spyderco. After getting on BF I had an EDC rotation of Kershaw, ZT and Benchmade. When I got to Spyderco they pushed all of the Kershaw, ZT and Benchmade out of my EDC rotation. I went through various Spyderco models but settled on PM2 and Manix 2 as my favorites. Manix 2 LW in Rex45 has become as close to "the one" as I will get. I have kept all of the other Spyderco models though. So yes and no- Cold Steel, SOG, Kershaw, ZT, Benchmade were all sold, various other Spyderco models are still here.

Unless you're talking about "Neo" in the Matrix, there is no such thing as "The One." ;)

I found the two! 😄 Sold off some, but kept many and they just sit in a closet where I frequently go to admire them Gollum style (my preciouses). If you like them and don’t need the space or money, save them! Oh and I occasionally add to the collection…

Kinda. My favorite and most frequently purchased “class” of knife is the smaller fixed “field” knife. Something suitable for most outdoor tasks, a little chopping, and some SD capability (finger guard, pointy point).

Therefore I have more than I feel I need, so my less-favorite tend to be given as gifts. I rarely sell, but rarely buy, and I love using a wife variety of knives.

Pretty simple concept, but I'll do my best to make it hard to understand!

Some lucky enthusiasts have found a single knife that does all the things: cutting, looks, feels good to use.

So, if you are one of these people, have you sold off the rest of your collection?
it would be the fiscally responsible thing to do. I like knives though, so no. I have em all.

Interesting, I never looked at it this way😁

Over the years I found some near perfect edc knives for me to rotate through. Ease of carry plays a big role to me, too.

But I kept most of my collection, only selling off or giving away the cheaper stuff.
