IL is about to screw its people even more

I never thought about the Americans with Disabilities Act...keep that one in your hip pocket!

LEO's huh? Who'd da thunk it!

I agree; it seems that they almost went out of their way to write this so that one hand manual opening knives would still be OK.
Assuming this poor excuse for a bill gets signed into law, it will probably take some case law to sort the whole mess out. In the meantime, some poor sap will be the first to get arrested and be the legal guinea pig. Not an enviable position to be in.

TOM, see below!

i spoke with KIM in Jill Tracy's office and ..
that bill is DEAD! it did not make it to committee!
that wording was put in by law enforcement officers {{ LEO's }}

so the bill is dead but one must always keep up on and fight silly laws!
in conversation with Kin, it come up also that to make a one handed knife agenst the law is to deny a handicapped person a reasonable accommodation under the Americans with Disabilities Act !!!
this could be used as a logical argument to many restrictive knife carry laws!!

I don't think that the disabilities act is going to save knife rights. I do not remember what the jurisdiction was, but I have read a knife law that makes it illegal to carry a switchblade unless you have only one hand. In that way, it seems quite possible to outlaw something for the majority of the people without running into the disability issue.

Thanks Dave
I was going give Jill's office a call today.
I seen your post and it made my day, this state is SO screwy. I live close to Missouri and keep thinking I have to west.

Either way, I think it is time for me to stop talking about it, and join kniferights.org so we have a voice against these foolish laws.

Anyone know the size of their membership, as opposed the membership of the AKTI?

From reading this part of the text:

or any assisted opening knife, which with the assistance of any internal mechanism can be easily opened with one hand by the flick of the wrist or by manipulating any portion of the blade;

I'm tempted to think that a non-assisted knife would be okay. It doesn't say just any knife that can be opened with hand, flicked, etc., but any assisted opening knife that can be opened in such ways. If you have a liner lock that you can flick open with enough force, there's no internal mechanism helping you do that, it's all manual.

Still, a pretty bad way for things to go in any case.

Right- it sounds like thay are trying to make sure they encompass all possible AO systems. While the effect of this law is obviously not cool, it is positive in that IL wants to make the statuatory law on AO's very clear. Many states have laws against switchblades that are defined with debateable definitions that include terms like "mechanical contrivance" (Wichita Kansas local ordinance) and Texas, where it wasn't until a cop and later activist judiciary decided that AOs were switchblades. I would rather have the law black and white like that than create a situation where "bad things happen to good people".

Of course, this is the state that banned AirSoft toys and slingshots, too. So this bill will probably pass, and I'll never see Chicago again. (But at least Chicagoans can sleep at night, knowing how safe they are.)

Yeah, I know I could sleep better at night knowing the kids down the street
can't pack a sling shot (spelled slung shot in the article) and sand bags.
God only knows how many lives will be saved from the drive-by sling shootings
and sand baggings.

That's just plain stupidity!!

EDIT: Didn't see this post....

These silly knife laws coming out of the States are starting to make Canada's weapon laws seem less annoying.
At least they're leaving knives alone here, pretty much(at least until they get rid of the guns...)

Didn't somebody propose a ban on "Rambo knives" up there last year?

And, many Canadians who attempt to import flickable knives have them intercepted at customs every year. You guys do have better laws for Short barrel rifles and shotguns than the US does (for the most part)- I'll concede to you that.

GREAT POINT DAVE.

Thanks for all you do.

Those of you in Illinois better not get complacent and think this is dead. These Freedom haters never quit. And for the rest of us we better keep our eyes and ears open as well.

Damn Jil Tracy! She's a representative from my district! Thank God I didn't vote for her! Sorry about that guys, hopefully we can vote her out when she comes up for re-election. Unfortunately, her family owns one of the largest businesses in the area, and she's got a lot of support.

I received this response from Jil Tracy's office yesterday, after I emailed her, asking why she wanted to criminalize hunters, fishermen, and sportsmen:

---------------
Thanks for your contact. We were trying to address a law enforcement concern but have realized the bill was too broad. I did not move the bill forward nor do I intend to. Jil Tracy
