So I recently posted in a sales thread " I'll take it" in the morning only to login that evening and the item was sold to some one else.

Can't talk $#!& in the thread ( got a warning already for that.) So what is my recourse. The item wasn't expensive at all but the principle pisses me off. They have a 100% feedback too. So you can have perfect feedback and not follow forum rules ?

Just needed to vent.

Did the seller contact you at all?

Sellers can sell to whom they choose. There is no recourse except to learn from the experience and move on.

I think I saw the thread you are speaking of. From the info that is public, this is what looks like happened.

You posted "I'll take it" and asked them to PM you. As a registered user you do not have PMs. You also do not have your email enabled so there was no way for them to contact you. He even mentioned it in the thread and asked you to message him as his email is enabled.

It looks like he contacted the 2nd in line later that evening who paid in a timely manner.

Going forward, after you say "I'll take it", initiate the private conversation by sending them an email. If they do not have it enabled, let them know and ask them to send you one either in the "I'll take it" post or leaving a Visitors Message on their profile.

Yup, did not realize I did not have PM.

Thanks for the info

My pleasure.

PM's are a perk of a paid membership. Basic, Gold, Platinum etc.

You can enable your email by going to Settings, then General Settings and you will see a box that allows you to receive emails by other members.

well i have had that happen to me in the past...we all live and learn...life is too short to worry about it but i agree it is aggravating...but there is lots more out there....and maybe u will even get a better price...God Bless John..what i always do when i am selling is go from the first person who is interested ....and if i get others interested...let them know too that way it keeps everyone happy...but it is hard to please everyone...but i do agree if many buyers do not follow up....it makes it harder for everyone....

I replied to a thread about exactly this same thing not long ago. Apparently "I'll take it" doesn't mean a whole lot. Because the seller can choose to sell to you. Or not. Course if you can't get his paypal address or however the seller wants to get paid, and you decide "well this is just too much trouble", then you are considered to have backed out of the deal and you are persona non grata.

Is that how it works or am I missing something?

Saying "I'll take it" is works just fine. In my opinion, it is the buyers responsibility to contact the seller privately after saying I'll take it. Whether that is by sending a PM or email. If you can't, let them know to contact you.

In this situation, the OP (potential buyer) said "I'll take the [ITEM X]. Please pm with your PayPal info" in the thread. OP doesn't not have Private Messaging privileges nor email enabled.

The seller responded "Your PM isn't enabled. Message me.". Another member claimed 2nds on the item five minutes after the OP posted I'll Take It.

Hours later, with no further contact from the OP, the seller decided to the person that claimed seconds, whom I can assume did actually contact them privately.

Perfectly reasonable in my opinion.

Communication is the key to smooth transactions.

The inverse (NOT honoring an "I'll take it" post) has happened and been abused with SUCH frequency here at Bladeforums, that there is a smaller window of acceptance.

In this modern era, transactions can and ought to be consummated within a couple of hours, unless direct contact has changed the deal.

Any barrier for communication: No PM's, no email, away at work, etc. allow the seller to maintain his prerogative to sell to you.... or not.

The OP understands this now.

I did not realize you had to pay for a membership to get PM. Why?

It's one of the perks.

There are still ways for Registered Users to contact other members.

1. Send an email through their profile. (See post #5 on how to enable your email)
2. Leave a Visitors Message on their profile.

If you plan to utilize the Exchange, it is prudent to have emails enabled so others can contact you. Otherwise you are doing yourself a disservice. This thread should serve as an example why.

Make sure to enable your email on here. After you say "I'll take it" send an email. You can do this without a paid membership. I send an email with the info from the sales thread and a link to the thread. I ask for their paypal address to send the funds. As soon as I get that I send the funds as quickly as I'm able, usually within 15 minutes of receiving their info. In the paypal item description I once again put the item info and a link to the for sale thread.

There are many ways to go about it, but that's a pretty straightforward method.

Yikes ! I did not even have the receive email option ! I just switched that ! Thanks again

I always thought "I'll take it " was the forum "handshake" I have always sold to the first person who says it and always buy items when I type it, even though I changed my mind after clicking submit.

I would have been really mad if this was some knife I was looking for, but it wasn't so I'm just whining at this point.

It is a general rule of thumb though not set in stone.

Some people don't care about posts in the thread and only respond to emails or PMs. How sellers run their sales thread is their prerogative, so long as it abides by the forum rules.

bubbaskyjacker, I looked, and it seems that your email still isn't active. Make sure you click both, Receive Email From Administrators and Receive Email From Other Members.

Recourse is to suck it up and try to learn from it. If you already got a warning for crap talking someone's sales thread then what does that tell you? Send an email to the buyer and ask for paypal information, explain you want the item and will pay for it ASAP, but you are on your way to church, work, whatever. Tying up an item all day while you are gone doing other things probably pisses off the seller just as much don't you think? That is pure entitlement in my opinion. Forum rules? have you even read them? Sellers can sell to whomever they want to, they are not obligated to hold an item for you or anyone else until someone gets around to paying for it. I don't mean to be rough on you, but put yourself in the other guys shoes for a minute.

Because the forums are free to everyone to read and participate, private messaging is not an obligation. The servers the forums are hosted on cost money, so does bandwidth, so does maintenance, just like everything else.

Jeez, I said I'll take it and checked back a week later and the knife was gone....... I am given to the use of hyperbole to make a point at times..... Russ

Good grief. The OP made a mistake. Benchwarmer clearly and politely explained the problem, which OP acknowledged was of his own making. I don't understand the need to get pissy with the OP.

Nobody's getting pissy. We used to have a pretty smooth procedure of saying "I'll take it" and then working out payment with the seller. Recently we have seen so many flakes never completing the sale or just not communicating after saying they'll take it, that sellers get antsy, too, and move on.

The problem is trickier for newbies, who don't know all the ins-and-outs, and may end up losing out to a second bidder that the seller knows already. Speaking up like bubbaskyjacker did is good. It gives everyone a chance to share understanding of how we go about this.

I also agree that communication is the key. Develop a clear format to eliminate misunderstanding. I like to use "I'll take it. PM on the way. (or email)"
