If you're a seller and a buyer posts "I'll take it", how long after would you expect a PM/email/payment? At what point would you offer the item for sale to others? Buyer posted I'll take it around 9:30 pm and it's been 3 hours with no email, PM, or anything. I've sent 2 messages attempting to make contact/arrange payment.

I know some post fast and pay fast - but dealing with the whole wide world.
It is usually a day or so to wait for an email or payment sometimes.
But at least 24 hours....

Others may say different?

I think that the 'proper' amount of time between an 'I'll take it' and payment is up to you.

It helps if you put some type of requirement in your sales thread, but at the end of the day, your sale, you decide how long you want to wait and how many emails you want to send....

There is a 'common sense' limit, and unless the seller contacts you asking for time for a specific reason you agree with, it's up to you.

The sale is CONUS only. I guess my personal feeling is that I don't think it's unreasonable to expect a buyer to immediately follow up his "I'll take it" post with a pm or email of some kind.

I'm assuming, that you're referring to the new member with 4 posts, & zero feedback to his name? It's quite apparent, that he's a newbie, & either doesn't yet understand BF sales forum etiquette, or got distracted with something else important, on this Fourth of July holiday weekend? In this particular instance, I would most likely cut the newbie some slack & if you haven't heard from him by tomorrow morning, then move along to the next buyer.

Personally, I wouldn't appreciate it, if somebody acted in this manner in one of my sales threads.

Communication is a necessity (on both ends). If a perspective buyer has the time to post, wanting to buy a knife listed in a sales thread, he should have the common courtesy to follow up immediately, with either a PM, or email, & communicate exactly what his intentions are.

Most seller's here seem to set pretty straight forward, simple rules in their sales thread's, & a few spell out strict conditions/stipulations. To avoid this happening again in the future, I would post a disclaimer stating: if I don't receive some form of communication with 1-2 hours of posting "I'll take it" in my thread (to discuss payment arrangements), I'll move on to the next perspective buyer.

Good luck, Spinny!

I would give them at least 24 hours, because unless they give any additional info I don't know what time zone they are in, what their work schedule is like etc. the guy could have PMd you at 1am his time and fallen asleep right after, could be a first responder who got called in and can't get back with you for a while. There's a hundered legitimate reasons.

He could be an idiot just jerking your chain, and I've been burned more than once, but I usually give the benefit of the doubt.

If anything I would mention in the post that you need payment writhin so many hours or you will sell to the next interested party.

but if you wait 48 hours or so before selling to someone else, even if he did have a legitimate reason to not get back to you, he should be pretty understanding that you could not wait forever, if they're upset at that point then they probably weren't worth dealing with in the first place.

Im not sure how long it took for you to respond to the claim, I haven't seen the sales thread. I always put a window of time for the person to pay within. If they don't pay it goes to the next person or back on the market.

On that, and again I havent seen the details, not everyone has a smart phone and things come up. Three hours isn't that long imo.

Sometimes things happen. People get distracted doing life, go to work, or go to bed....

We have to remember that there are members in different time zones, and that can make a big difference.

That said, I don't have a lot of patience anymore. Guess I'm getting old and cranky. I would say if you haven't received any communication by morning, it is still for sale...

If you have tried to contact him without success then I think it's fair to sell to someone else.

Ideally I think the seller should specify that they expect a confirmation email and the buyer should send one but that's probably a lesson for next time. When I have bought I have always emailed asking if the seller is happy to wait a few hours for payment since I'm often at work, with the understanding that they're under no obligation.
Communication is good. Communication on the interwebs isn't always straightforward. You can probably chalk this one up to miscommunication and nobody should have hard feelings.

On a couple of occasions, I've had new members post an "I'll take it," not really knowing the significance of it and backout/change their mind the next day (before making payment). I politely let them know the error of their way. They thanked me for the clarification and said it wouldn't happen again.

I try to make payment as soon as possible after I post an "I'll take it," and prefer others do the same or at least make arrangement soon after posting.

I would give your buyer until mid-day tomorrow, just to ensure they're back to their regular schedule. Of course, the timing is up to you. In the mean time, I would not mark your item sold or sold pending funds. If you receive other "I'll take its," just let them know they are next in line and you are waiting for a response from the first guy. Give them a specific time when you'll let them know whether they have the item or not (say noon tomorrow). Hope it all goes smoothly. Mike

Chris posted before I finished my book. His advice is just fine also.

What does "I'll take it" mean?

It doesn't mean "I'll take it maybe later or when I feel like it"

Right after posting "I'll take it" as a buyer, your next move should be to contact the seller and pay for what you said you wanted to buy....

The seller shouldn't have to chase you or wait for you to complete a transaction you initiated.

I agree. I've purchased a few knives while I've been at work, & wasn't able to make the payment until after I finished. As long as there is clear communication, & both parties agree, things typically work out.

Spot on, Alex!

I don't think that this specific incident is that big of a deal, considering this involves a new member...but then again, this isn't my sales thread.

I wait 24 hrs., more if the potential buyer is a newbie to the forum (takes them time to communicate, as well as understand the forum messaging policies, etc.), before moving on to the next interested party. Besides, this is a hobby, and I ensure I always post sale threads when I have reasonable time at hand (less busy days typically).

48 hours. Although I would in no way hold it against any seller for requiring that contact be made in a certain period of time. Their sale, their rules.

US sale by a seller in Florida. I can see his point of view.
Every other US time zone is later than his, not earlier.
I would give a newbie a break and wait til the next day.

Well the buyer paid. So that's that. In the message I sent last night I said I was giving him until 10am Monday to contact me or pay, else it's going to someone else. Guess he got the message. Still I think the buyer should take the initiative to complete the transaction on their own.
