Updated with a link...see post #12 or THIS thread

Guys, some time ago I had the idea to find a knife forum and post to see if anyone had an interest in working with me.

I can't make a knife to save my life (trust me on this one), nor do I want to, but I'm good at drawing them and,
I would like to see my knives made.

So, I posted something and got a response and I started drawing knives. I did around 40-50 variations of the knife.
Well, nothing came out of this and (I'm not mentioning names so no need to comment on this...the knife maker that is)
it seemed to me that the reason was that I had no clue what the different parts of the knife were called.
Well, that's the way I understood it anyway.

So here it is, I have NO clue what's called what but as long as you make me understand, I can draw it.
Also, I PREFER to communicate over the phone as it saves me a lot of time when it comes to getting
things explained to me. Drawings of course will be sent over e mail.

I know most of you don't do this because it's a big money maker so I'm not asking for money, I DO however want
my name and/or logo on the knife and on any pictures and articles related to it. Basically, I want the credit for
the design, NOT for making it.

Should you, say, have some company interested in making them in larger quantities, then I would like to share
in the profits but again, only if there are any decent amounts involved so to speak. Ie, there is no money
for both of us making single knives so that's not what I'm looking for. I just would like to see my designs made.

Also, I want the right to refuse to have any more made (commercially or whatever).

However, once you've made a knife that we've worked on together, you can obviously do whatever you want with it.
I'm just putting this in there in case (hypothetically) someone wants to produce it in quantities and for instance,
I don't like what they're doing with the design. NOT so I can go back on something you've already made, I would
like this to be VERY CLEAR so you don't think I'll design a knife, you make it and then I say, hell, you can't sell it.
That's not the way things are done.

My subscription here is expiring and I thought I'd make a second attempt before it does.
Also, I'm in Monroe, NC so anyone in this area interested in getting together to look at my stuff, let me know.
NO strings attached.

The same thing with any designs I make. If you don't like what I do, you can either tell me and I'll change it till
you like it or you do NOT have to use it and NO, there will be no request for money from me.

Again, I want my designs out there as I love knives and it would be cool.
Now, should you find it in your heart to make a knife for me that I designed, it would be greatly appreciated.

I also wrote an article for Knives Illustrated (I think it was) in 93 I believe on how to design knives so if anyone
should happen to have that issue, I would like to buy that copy or get a photocopy of the article.

If anyone wonders what I do for a living, I am a webdesigner and I also do other graphics.

Thanks

George

George, it would be nice to see one or two of your
concept designs for knives. Even if it is just to illustrate
your detailed post, who knows where this can lead to...

All the best,

guiri, we have a specific new forum for this kind of work. Let's see who is interested here.

Custom & Handmade is not a Knifemaker forum as much as a serious collector forum.

Hello George, I may be interested in working with you. I too prefer to communicate via telephone. I get a clearer idea in a much shorter time period. You can look up my started threads here to see some examples of my work. It wouldn't hurt to trade a few emails and a few telephone calls to see if we can come up with something. Here is my contact info., send me some designs and give me a call.

Boys, I shall return with a few drawings, Esav the mod, do you want me to repost this in the right forum and tell everyone about it or?
My mistake, sorry.

George

No problem, it's in the right forum now. Keep posting here so the whole story ends up in the same place.

Ok guys, here are a FEW samples. I have a lot more and I've done anything from kitchen knives to fantasy knives and axes so the creativity is there and designing comes fairly easy to me. The numbers you see in brackets on the scans are design # such and such and when I stopped drawing knives some 20 or more years ago, I had done a few hundred.

Generally what I do is draw something that I like, ie, blade or handle shape and then I play with it till I get more stuff out of it (most of the time anyway).

I don't want to post the designs I drew for the other guy because I really like those and want to keep them for when someone is ready to make some and maybe I can even get a knife out of the batch :)

Anyway, comments on these and let's take it from there.

By the way, the one with the handle in color is intended to be raised so to speak. Ie, the green stuff should resemble leaves and be raised from the handle itself.

Darrin, nice stuff. This one's my favorite simply because my taste is more towards the simple lines but that doesn't mean a thing. Handles can be changed and so can material.
As I said before, there are no strings attached. I draw it and if you don't like it, just toss it out the door :)

=============
Anyway guys, I also drew one that I had a blade smith interested in, in 96 or so and I flew to the US (for another reason) and went to a knife show in Orlando to show it to him but he
thought when he saw it that it would be a bit too complicated. Anyway, I think it would require a lot of filework but I would really like to see that one made.

Most of my ideas/designs are simple drawings and I've never taken it past that simply because I've never really pursued this. I will deliver a 2D drawing and I'll rely on YOUR skills and
experience for the cross cut of the handle as it's really hard for me to draw and visualize. The same thing with the blade. You tell me if the lines I draw are doable or not, if you can
grind the blade like that or not.

Needless to say, some makers like to design and I'm sure some don't. Well, I can't make'em and don't even want to try and if you feel a bit the same about designing/drawing them,
OR, you just want some different ideas, that's what I'm here for.
on your

Sorry George but I wouldn't be interested in making anything like that. Thanks for the opportunity though.

:)

That's ok, thanks for the straight answer though. Your stuff from what I did see is pretty different from what I would normally draw, but you know
what the dog said, taste is different and then turned and lick his own butt :)

Thankfully we don't all like the same stuff, that would suck.

Some very nice damascus blades by the way (Yours I mean)

Later

George
