Illegal?

I read some where in a magazine that setting up dead falls and figure 4 traps are illegal in some states? I was thinking of practicing on making these traps to become more familiar with them, not to catch food. (I don't do this all the time but...) Snares I have used them before in the woods of PA for small game, but I can't understand why the above is illegal?

The setting of traps and/or snares is trapping. Trapping is regulated by the states and outlawed by a few, just like hunting and fishing. Most officers would understand the difference between a bare deadfall built in the backyard and a dirthole set and baited along a game trail. However, it is still trapping. As was suggested above, check with your state fish & game officials.

I've thought about the possibility of doing training with close-but-won't-actually-trap traplike objects--e.g., an arapuca (trap that drops a field-expedient cage on birds) with an open top, so that any bird that would have been trapped would simply fly out the top. You might be able to come up with similar modifications to your proposed traps that might keep you from getting convicted while you're just figuring stuff out. Just an idea.

when I was younger I used to go the live pultry store and buy some chickens then practice my traps in the yard and have a bar b q
