Illinois carry laws, assisted opening.

Double edged knives are regarded as dangerous weapons *if* you use them as a weapon. That's the strict interpretation.

The tricky bit is that most double edged knives are not tool, hunting, sporting, or convenience knives--they're designed to stab. You may be at the mercy of whether the officer was having a good day or bad day, because the bad day guy will look at that and think "weapon." But if you're not doing anything remotely illegal with it, and aren't carrying it for "self defense purposes," then the good day officer will probably ask you all about it and how you made your own blade.

I'm not sure I made my answer clear to you, though...there's nothing inherently wrong with it by the letter of the law, but the spirit of the law might raise an eyebrow.

Well I've been working in Illinois for about a year now. My stable of knives is the Kershaw spec bump, CRKT Ripple, CRKT Eros, all of which I've carried at work. Had a coworker joking I was carrying a switchblade machete when I had the ripple or eros, so I showed him the Spec Bump the next day. heh I also now have a Kershaw Centafonte and both style edges of the Boker Plus MPT. I couldn't make up my mind between them. ha. The Boker with tek lok is nice for discreet carry under an overshirt.

In regards to this thread, I am thinking about buying a 3" assisted open knife. Would that be legal to own/ship to naperville, I.L, U.S.A?

I live in The Metro East, the Illinois side of the St. Louis a Metropolitan area. Lots of people carry knives with pocket clips around here. I know a lot of them are assisted openers. I cannot speak for Chicago, but I think a person will probably only get charged with some sort of knife charge if that person has caught the attention of an officer for something else.

On state property keep it 3" or less. That is the law. In most places it is not aggressively enforced, but better safe than sorry.

I understand there is a law to make autos legal if one has a concealed carry permit. This law makes me nervous because I could see it being used to harass someone with a one hander by saying they are not licensed to carry an auto. I also do not like the idea of any sort of pocket knife being classed as a weapon. I have carried a pocket knife for fifty years, and the only person I have ever cut was myself accidentally.

Just getting to this as nobody replied, u have shipped auto's to my house in naperville along with plenty of AO knifes with no issue. Nobody has even questioned it and the cops are way too busy running after the little kids smoking weed in the high schools Haha
