Iltis felling axe 35"

Super review, Cliff!
I wish I could say more nice things about these axes, because mine work well now. you've made the main point - which is how much work is required to put a good one into good order - with power tools.
I'm not so sure we could even compare my big Iltis to yours. I bought the 2.5lb head and it weighed closer to 3lb. Maybe yours really is 2.5lb... Such is life with Iltis axes!

It would make sense yours is heavier as you noted having to work on the bevels, mine just required slimming the initial secondary edge bevel. It is too bad the QC issues on these are significant. Not everyone can handle them readily, and having to do a significant amount of grinding to correct a poorly formed edge puts them out of the user class for a lot of people.

On the positive, Wetterling now has a full size axe, larger than the forest axe with what looks like the same head pattern. They also call it a felling axe. They basically have duplicated the GB line. I am trying to see a top down shot of the had as compared to the forest axe, if it is the same profile it should be very good NIB. Wetterling also have a lot of QC issues, but they are not so severe that they require a lot of initial grinding.
