I'm a little confused about the DOTD, can anyone help me out?

This may sound like a stupid question, but I honestly don't know the difference. I'm wondering why so many people stalk these forums every day (including myself) looking for the deals of the day for items that can be purchased straight from Himalayan Imports web site for the same price. Example, the chiruwa ang khola that was just sold in the Tuesday deals was just five dollars less than one you could get from the web site, yet so many people are bummed because they missed the deal. Am I missing something? Are the ones that you can purchase off the web site going to be of lower quality somehow? I know that some of the DOTD are amazing deals but some just appear to be the same price. Any help?

there are items sold here that you can't get at the store and usually the prices are lower. you also get to see the knife you buy.

seeing is believing... some of the items are one of a kind or unusual, special material handles, discounted - sometimes a lot, for certain seasons/reasons.

occasionally there are surplus/runoffs and clearance - those are the ones to really catch your eye (my eye my eye!)...

and then there's the stuff that is well, worth hunting (not telling ;>)

yup. we have a reason :)

I know that there are lot of items that you can't get on the web site that you can get here on the deals of the day, so I was only referring to the ones that you can get on a web site and that don't come at a discounted price.

You are right about getting able to see the product though. But the funny thing is, it seems like people on this forum (including me once again) drool over every kukri in the category they've been looking for, so I can't imagine anyone being dissatisfied if they just went ahead and ordered it off the web site sight unseen. It seems that the biggest thing people care about anyway is whether it has a horn or a would handle and you get to choose between those factors on the website.

Stalking the DOTDs adds some excitement to the process of building your HI blade collection. Many here enjoy the challenge of chasing a particular DOTD blade and the satisfaction of getting a "Done deal" email from Yangdu. Try it - you'll see. :)

(Plus, if you are one of the lucky ones to grab a DOTD blade, it's at your door in a few days, as opposed to waiting on a blade ordered through the website.)

he'll figure it out anyway, i'm spillin the beans. everyone's got a favorite 'not in production' model. they're things that only show up here like the foxy folly, sgian dubh, chitlangi bowie, cherokee rose, kerambit (what do we call it now, chirrabit?), munk bowie, the r-knives, bdc, crow knife, d-1, rediculously oversized versions of the regular models, and a ton of other stuff i've not mentioned. then you have the exotic woods, antler horns, engravings, etchings, and the occaisional one of a kind, like a slipjoint.

beyond that, it's just one of the better forums.

chiruwa ang khola that was just sold in the Tuesday

To answer this specific question. The CAK on tuesday was done by Sgt. Khadka. You cannot get these on the website.

Sgt. Khadka has a cult following of sorts. His khuks have different attributes from the normal CAKs that some people like better. Walnut handle, big slab pins, Traditional bolster, traditional blade shape, white metal fittings, etc.

Have you ever ordered off the web site though? Cause with all the rave reviews
for not only the product but also the service, I would like to find someone on this forum who has ordered off the web site and felt slighted or regretful in any way. I just can't imagine that if you pay the premium price then you wouldn't get a premium product is well. HI doesn't seem to be that kind of company from what I've read. What do I know though. Just ignorant speculation on my part being that I haven't ordered one either way yet.

So who makes the ones you get on the website? What wood do they use? These are things that I would love to know.

These days, if you cold order a wood CAK from the site, you'd probably get a 16.5" Sisau wood, Habaki bolster, brass fittings, by Bura, Kumar, Sher, or Vim, with the small pins on the handle. These are really good, but Sgt. Khadka's have a certain look that people find appealing.

Sgt. Khadka isn't one of the normal HI kamis, he makes his own khuks and HI sells the creme of the crop for him.

DOTD just posted - jump on over there for a look.

It just seems to be a big hassle. I just tried to buy the CAK that was posted and it sold right as I sent in the email not 7 minutes after the initial post. I would think that you would have to live on these forums in order to get what you want. I've been looking for 4 months for one CAK with silver fittings for my buddy who is going to be deployed to Iraq in august and at this rate I might not get one by the time he gets back.

Yes, to get a Sgt. Khadka with white metal fittings (normal ones are brass), you need to live on this forum.

Or email Yangdu and ask if she has one you can buy. She seems to be flush with Khadka right now :)

You gotta be quick young shark. The deals are usually posted around 3:00 EST. Just a hint.

You can order a blade through the website with as many specifications as you desire (size, type of handle, etc.), realizing of course that the more specific you get, the longer the potential wait if Yangdu does not have one in stock. I suggest emailing Yangdu to see if she has anything close to your specs. She will do everything she can to make it work. Good luck.

Now this is EXTREMELY helpful information. Thank you very much for this tip. I don't really care if it's right away or not. I'm just determined to get my buddy the best/most durable kukri I can find before he leaves for the sandbox. He's always wanted one and just hasn't ever gotten around to buying himself one. Thanks again, I'll try this avenue since I work most of the day and can't always be near a computer and compete with all the itchy trigger fingers in here.

7 minutes...hehehe.

Good luck...Yangdu can often come through and always tries to.
