Bruise...

relax. Truth is relative.:)

The very fact that you are concerned pretty much exonerates you from eternal damnation and the fiery pits of perpetual endless loops of 'Muzak's "Girl from Ipenema."':)

Hope your holidays were within acceptable limits.

Thanks for your replies.

Today is another day. I went and saw that new Elvis movie. Wasn't much singing in it though, just a bunch of short people running around, with the main character carrying a piece of jewlery around his neck. It was rather long and I got a chuckle out of the people who bought the jumbo sized drinks.

The whole thing is over now. Most of the relatives I won't see till next year. I wonder how many people will see all the holes in my stories. On the whole I think most of the people will forget, after all "that Bruise guy ain't got nuthin' good to say". :)

Bruise, a late comment but here it is. You had a choice between two outcomes, lying to maintain harmony at the family holiday gathering or speaking the ill truth about a family member and causing hurt and hard feelings. You made the same choice I would have made in a similiar situation. In the end you placed family above yourself, I can't find any fault with that. Sometimes you just have to make personal sacrifices for family. It is not always easy and you may feel somewhat less for the experience, but I believe what you did was what was needed for the family. Try not to dwell on it.:)

"Son," if you cannot see the difference between lying to protect the feelings of others and lying to aggrandize oneself, no explaination would suffice or is required.

Bruise started out by truthfully telling what he did and asking for reactions of the group. When Bura Fan was "called" on his story, his initial reaction included inviting physical combat with another forum member and repeating his, now, admittedly inaccurate claims.

This business of inventing an heroic military background does not rank with crimes against the persons or property of others. It's been done by NFL coaches, Congressmen, and a famous Bando teacher, amongst others. Life will go on. Bura Fan did not seek to profit from it except in gaining unmerited respect. He now seeks to earn the respect of the group by honesty. Ask yourself if you are helping.

"Improvement" of one's status by falsely claiming heroic, or simply "hairy," experiences clearly seems to offend those who were actually there and served at the risk of their lives and physical and mental health. As adults, we all ought to try to avoid gratuitous offensive conduct, no?

I am curious to know; Why one lie is more acceptable than others in this forum? Is it simply because it isn't based on military?

And another thing if a child pretends to be patton, audie murphy or any other hero
is he just as guilty as a man?

Just seems like a double standard here:(

I have been observing this with amazement. There's a full court press on some poster (I think named "Burafan" that btw, is only suspected of lying in another thread about some kind of alleged special forces activities.)

I'm still waiting to see how hypocritical it will get to be on this.

Bruise knew that what he did was not acceptable because he felt bad about it.Feeling unhappy about something that one can change for the better is a fine way to learn but it is the height of disrespect to con an obviously fine gentleman by telling him it's O.K. and to just get over it.

I totally commend the strokes that were given Bruise by everyone but do not agree that it is acceptable to knowingly lie.

Kinda like the old familiar threesome: Situational ethics, moral relativism, and conditional integrity. Just another way of spinning words to rationalize bad behavior and excuse speech and actions that are offensive.

off rant and off vent

Flame suit on!
:) ;)

If you would have told every one all they wanted to hear. You might have damaged the guy in so many ways that he might not have ever come back from the damage. I guess that puts us back to the old saying that "If you can't say any thing good about a person, Say nothing at all" that's close any way.:)

As I told a preacher once,

"If you walked on water, by the time it got back to the church council the story would have changed to your having exposed yourself to take a leak."

Heads they win, tails you lose. Sometimes even having your jaws wired shut wouldn't have stopped others from misinterpreting what you mumbled to fit their preconceptions.

Kismet:

How strange you should mention this, since this very tune has been stuck in my head since the second week of November (from a Bossa Nova CD I picked up at that time). But rather than grating on me, I've found it to have a gentle 'sing-song' quality about it, and now I've got other people humming it along with me.

Tall and tan and young and lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking
And when she passes, each one she passes goes "a-a-ah!"
When she walks she's like a samba that
Swings so cooll and sways so gentle,
That when she passes, each one she passes goes "a-a-ah!"
Oh, but I watch her so sadly
How can I tell her I love her?
Yes, I would give my heart gladly
But each day when she walks to the sea
She looks straight ahead not at me
Tall and tan and young and lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking
And when she passes I smile, but she doesn't see
She just doesn't see
No she doesn't see

:p
