I'm a newbie who wants a sharp pocket knife. Help appreciated.

My 2c, get a Kershaw Leek in S30V. Without imperical data I am guessing it stays sharp 4 or 5 times longer than my Rainbow Leek. Both hair shaving sharp out of the box.
I'm with knarfeng on the serrations. They are really use specific and for a true EDC for general use I stay with plain edges. Kevin
 
Sharpest knife out of the box I've ever bought was a Benchmade 943 Osbourne in S30V. Around 115$ online or so

A very close second was a Spyderco Delica 4, Which can easily be had for 40-50$ This is what I'd recommend.
