I'm a newbie

The Spyderco Native 5 would be my suggestion.

That Northwoods Hawthone Jack is real nice. There are a number of Northwoods knives that are very nice.

You can not go wrong with a pm2, start with that imho. Try to find a small sebenza in a shop a few months after that and play with it, you'll really aprecate the beauty in it's simplicity and functionality. Besides,if you dont like it you can always resell it on these forums!

Good luck with your choice!

Small Sebenza. Spend the money, you wont regret it.

Yep, I completely agree. If you're going to go with a modern knife design - and you're truly going to buy only one - then get a Sebenza. The Insingo has become my favorite, but they're all worth consideration:

I'd recommend one of the following:

Spyderco Slysz Bowie
Spyderco PM2
Small Sebenza Insingo

For traditionals - I would echo the statements of others that the Northwoods line is very nice (check out the new Michigan Jacks - with the very useful modified sheepfoot blade).

If you found the Sebenza and Benchmade a little too pricey, check out the Kershaw Rake, fantastic value for the money.

Just by way of example, here are a couple of Northwoods Hawthorne Jacks - I love them at least as much as my Sebenzas:

Indeed Northwoods are very nice but they may be hard to get

Benchmade Barrage

As has been said, it really depends on what you want in a knife.
As popular as the PM2 is, it isn't for everybody; and I think there are better choices based on what little you've said. The first knife that came to mind has already been mentioned - the Spyderco Sage 2. Willing to spend a bit more money (but still half the cost of a small sebenza)? How about a Zero Tolerance 0770CF or 0808? Interested in a nice traditional? I'm a fan of a few single bladed models offered by Great Eastern Cutlery; ie, the 15, 47, 77, and 92.

I own both the small Sebenza and the Benchmade 940. Both are nice knives. I like the 940 better and have it in my pocket right now. But that's just my personal preference.

I probably should just do a copy and paste of the following recommendations. I seem to say it often around here.

You could do a lot worse than the basic Spyderco line. Depending on your preferences, consider the Dragonfly, Delica, Stretch and Endura. Dragonfly for a small knife that can do a larger knife's job, Delica for a small medium sized knife that is easy to carry and is all most people ever need, Stretch for a medium sized knife that can work hard when necessary and the Endura for large knife jobs that's still light and fairly easy to carry.

None of these knives cost even $100.

Part of me hates to just echo what other posters have said but...

IMHO, if we're talking about a knives that are really great for what you pay, I couldn't recommend the paramilitary 2 or native 5 highly enough. It took me a while to warm to Spydercos, but once I did I pretty much never looked back. I think the Native 5 in particular is a really fantastic EDC. Great steel, great lock, terrific ergos and, aesthetically, I think it's a great looking knife as well.

The Spyderco Slysz Bowie was also suggested, and that is one truly terrific knife. You can find them on the exchange around 220 or so.

As always, it's a requirement that you let us know what you choose! And post pictures once you get it! Welcome to the forum and hobby [emoji106]🏽

Also, this thread needs some pictures! edit: not to suggest that Link2Derek's pictures aren't terrific, which they are!

Thank you all! I wrote several days ago as a newbie for guidance on a starter EDC. A number of you generously replied with suggestions and, even more important, challenged me to think about my needs before jumping in. Based on your inputs, I decided on a Spyderco Sage 2 which I just ordered. Then I found a good local knife shop where I was shown the Sage 2, but also -- OMG! -- the small Sebenza with Crop Circles. Luckily for me, sanity returned and I left the shop.

The Sage 2 (or any Sage, for that matter) is a great choice, so congratulations! And, just so you know, it probably won't be your last purchase... and that's Ok!

We would love to see pics when you get your new knife - we love pics here. To wit, here is my CF Sage - I absolutely love it:

Paramilitary 2 can be had for < $110, shipped. I'd recommend that or a standard Benchmade 940. I carry a Delica 4 most often, however.

It's just the perfect all around knife. She isn't pretty, but it does everything I need it to do.
