Im a proud new ESEE owner.

Yeah I tried to cut a baked potato in half with my 5 it wasn't the best cut. But it worked. lol
The 6 looks like a more functional knife but the 5 is just plain fun to show people and watch their expressions.

I will grant you that about the ESEE 5 or the BK-2. But eventually you have to choose to use them and I tend to choose something with a thinner blade steel in general and I can split wood if I want to.

Congrats on the purchase. I've wanted an Esee 6 for a while. Loved my 5 while I had it. Depending on which you gravitate to more, one thing you might want to try is swapping the scales, personally I find the canvas micarta much nicer than the linen in terms of grip. It also gives the 6 a fuller purchase while slimming down the handle a hair on the 5. My buddy did that his and it is awesome.

Enjoy the blades brother.

^this.

My BK2 was my first "real" knife, and while it really can do pretty much anything (similar to the ESEE 5), over the 4 years I've had it, I've gravitated away from it for most tasks/outings. I've found that for most stuff, the thickest I'd ever need/want is 3/16in thick for the spine, and generally I would like it even thinner than that. And what is more, I feel it hasn't reduced what I am capable of doing in any way. Sure, some techniques might be different with a 1/8in or 5/32in knife vs a 1/4in blade, but I still feel confident that I'd be able to get it done.

The BK2 is still my designated "fatwood breaking up knife". I just find that I usually would rather carry the BK9, and a Mora than just the BK2, which weigh almost the same (within 4oz or so by my rough calculations).

The 6, Izula II, and the Laserstrike are the best out of the ESEE lineup IMO.

Anyway, enjoy the new steel. I'll be interested to see which of these two blades you prefer after you (the OP) have some time to really test them out :).

Received my Esse 6 yesterday and as far as the knife all I can say is wow. The sheath not so much. While it is functional it does the knife no justice.

I love the 6's sheath. It's the ideal material. Leather would hold moisture and cause rust while kydex would get brittle in cold temperatures.

Carbon fiber might be a nice material upgrade for the 6 sheath.

Love ESSE knives. I have the 4 and the Izulu with a paracord wrap, no scales. I'm so glad I bought one when they were "RAT" knives-just a way cooler name and logo! "Esse" sounds like a salad dressing! :barf::D. (I'd buy an ESSE if I lost mine). I never go into the woods without the RC-4 and it's the one I'd probably take if I could only take one. (I typically have the Izulu and Benchmade 581 too-the Becker 9 in base camp. I also carry a folding saw). I thnik the 4 is one of the best woods knives out there-certainly near the very top for the money!

Well then Butcher, to each their own sir... I surmise you don't get out camping and split small timber. The Esse 5 will do a much finer job for this than a thinner knife. Thanks for your feedback..

You know what they say about assuming my friend

Followed my dad on trapline for years in the snow, we carried axes(mine was a hatchet)
Own 10 heavily forested acres up north in the Cariboo region.
Hunt, fish, camp and backpacked for more than 35 years

Used a lot of axes and knives in that time

I have wetterlings, husquavarna, gransfors axes plus others in many shapes and sizes plus 2 chainsaws but I am not sure if they will do the job on splitting small timber.

My opinion is based on using a becker 2 and any 3/16 quality knife that is longer is better IMOP Proved it to myself with a becker 9 and 4 for comparison.

Other than cutting a lawnmower in half there is not a task that the 6 can't do better than a 5.
I bet a 6 would beat a 5 in a back to back batonathon.....that length is handy and 3/16 is plenty thick.

But if you like it that is what counts

With regards
