It cost me $40 but its worth every penny to be able to post with my buddies here. Maybe I'll take advantage of "Knifemaker" status again and learn to post a picture or two. I may be laid off at the prison and go back to knifemaking. Hopefully Ive learned to disipline my time better and can produce knives fast enough to make a living. Im scared but excited.

Glad to see you back Bruce!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry about the job but I'm sure you won't have any trouble making it on your knife making talent!
You take care and God Bless!!!!
Michael

Welcome back, Bruce. We've missed ya! Good luck in your full-timer status if it happens.

You'll be fine Bruce. Please show us the G-hawk sometime.

Good to see you too Michael , You too Jeff. :)

Yup, wanna see more pointy-shooty things. I'm sure you'll do fine going full-time again.

OH!!! NO!!! You!!! I am leaving. HEHEHEHE!!!! :D :D

Bruce, nice to see you back. Hopefully your day job doesn't end until you've built up enough to get back to full time knife making.

Thanks for all the good wishes and encouragments. If I do get laid off I can collect employment insurance and start production again, and by the time it runs out I may be up to speed. Hopefully.

I only made about 3 knives last year but Ive been working on an axegun in my spare time for 11 months now. It has been lots of fun but as much time as Ive spent on it I could have made 50 hunting knives and made more money I bet. Where do you guys think the market is? Lower end, mid priced or high end? What type of knives will sell, hunters, bowies, folders?

I've been doing well with my hunters. I'm also getting positive response to my larger field and survival/camp style knives. Folders will always be a wanted item. I haven't ventured there yet.

Bruce, Would have never thought a prison would be laying off. I'm sure there isn't any shortage of prisoner's. I haven't gotten any work off my web page in months and come to think of it inquirres from it for awhile either. I still think Blade Gallery is the best bet. Maybe you can get a student or two. What ever I wish you the best! Hopefully a few people will be getting there tax refunds soon.....

Raymond, there are more prisoners than ever but my job is as an intermittant and Im only allowed 1560 hours per year. I worked far more than that and need to be laid off for at least 3 months and then hired back. Im afraid after 3 months they may replace me. Time will tell.

Bowies,Bowies and Bowies.

Yeah, high end bowies. I know there are people there, but maybe Michael Price knives and push daggers?

Welcome back to the fold Bruce, I'd wondered why I hadn't seen much of your work for a while. I know exactly what you mean about the time discipline, it's my biggest problem and that's what'd worry me if I had to go full time. Well, that and being able to sell my knives. ;) But that's one issue I don't think you'd be subject to. Good luck!

Bruce,
You have a fine reputation and "credentials" as a Master Smith.
You have done what it takes to prepare yourself for going full time if that is what it ends up. Suggest you contact some of the dealers who have handled your work in the past and see what their position would be in buying/selling your work going forward. I have worked with several fine dealers/purveyors and they each offer excellent marketing insight and knowledge of their particular approaches to the knife markets.
However it turns out, best wishes!
