I'm becoming a knifesnob!

Here's the story. The other day my brother and I were over at my Grandfathers house helping him drain a diesel tank. He had gone to the back yard to get a spare hose that he could attach to the pump and when he came back around he also brought a little clamp to attach the hose to the pump. He said " Either of you boys got a knife with a screwdriver or a knife I could use?" My brother who does not always have an edc knife responded that he did not have a knife on his person. Now I had my BM in my right front pocket but the moment the words knife and screwdriver were used together I started getting these horrible images in my head and I was thinking about the cost of my knife. After all this passed through my head I still could not lie to my Grandfather. I said " Yes I have a knife and no you cannot use it."
Am I really turning into a knife snob?

That's why there's Squirt model from Leatherman. :)
Have one for backup, just in case. It comes in handy. It's real small so it's no fuss carrying.
Good for your BM not seeing Mr. Bolthead.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Mr. Bolthead walks in the bar.
"Hey, I got an issue to settle down."
Mr. BM the barkeep replies.
"What a chance! My cousin Squirty's right here. He'll show you the way."
Mr. Bolthead going nuts seeing little Squirty grinning all the way.

What did he say after? Just curious :)

I dunno though, a knife snob... that might be... yea maybe a little :). Don't let it get you down though, it just means you care about your investments.

However, I probably would have used it just because I would be too lazy to go get anything else.

He understood. He just got out of the hospital and while he was in he had to send all his personal affects home. Somewhere along the way home my grandmother misplaced his little case folder of the type that you often see older gentlemen carry. He was really bummed about it and I've gotten him knives before but those little two blade folders with the simulation handles are all he will carry.

I've personally questioned the masculinity of those not carrying knives, every single time.

Hahahahaha... this kills me... I love it... though not in an unmasculine way... :)

How does that make you a knifesnob?

Knives are not designed to be used as screwdrivers. That's why they invented actual screwdrivers. You had a high-quality, expensive knife; and you didn't want it to get damaged...... If a friend came up to you and said he wanted to use your car as a battering ram, and you refused to give him your keys; does that make you a car snob?

second that! Well said.

A knife is the most expensive, and least effective screwdriver that you'll ever own!

Get a SAK! I carry a SAK of some sort or another just for this things, plus you get an extra blade which is very sheeple friendly.

There's a special part of hell reserved for those who use knives as screwdrivers.

I might look at this a different way. I don't know how close you are to your grandfather, but I would never let a knife come between me and my grandfather. To me, the knife has little to do with it. If the knife is so expensive that it couldn't possibly be ruined, then why carry it.

Now, of course it is horrifying to think anyone would use a knife for a screwdriver. Would your grandfather replace your BM if he broke it?

My grandparents are all gone now. I would probably give up my knives just to have some more time with them...

Snob? Nahhh...but I might call it somthing else...

I totally disagree. Using a knife as a screwdriver is the fastest way I know to void a warranty and snap off the tip. Lotus, My wifes father is exactly the same way about knives-whatever he has handy to perform a chore is what he'll use. And if you hand him your knife I'll promise you it will have a chipped blade or a broken tip when you get it back. I love the old guy, (he's 83) and he gets around and works cattle like a man 25 yrs younger, but I'm still not giving him a $125.00 knife to use a screwdriver...

I'll go find the right tool for him and let him use that. It may take a couple of minutes longer but it beats the hell out of watching your new Spyderco or Benchmade get trashed... Just my 2 cents

I hear ya. However it doesn't make you a bad Grandson to decline the use of your knife as a screwdriver. The best answer: "No way Grandpa. I'll get you a screwdriver so you don't cut yourself."

This is exactley the reason why I EDC to carry knives. I carry a Benchmade of some sort, and a SAK as well. This way I do have a screwdriver if asked.

That said I agree with the poster who said I they would hand over the knife. I miss my grandfather dearly and would give anything to spend more time with him. If thrashing a $150 knife keeps him happy then have at it. Even though he understood imagine if he had been upset by this. That would be a terrible reason to have for something to come between you and your grandfather. Just my $.02.

Hay dude no worries you maybe could have handled it better sayin yeah i got a knife but please dont use it as a screwdriver it was a lil expensive. Or somehting to that affect. You have a knife and a knife isnt a screwdriver though I see it used as one all the time. First thing I ask people when I hand them my knife IF i hand them my knife is "what you usin it for" and it any prying or anything is involved and I dont have a strider;) I usually deny them the use of the knife. I dont know about a knife snob like others said your just caring for what you have , your just careful and you dont wanna see your knife screwed up. Your grandfather will understand I hope and it shouldnt even be a big deal. Good luck.

Knife snobbery would be to not want to be near your grandfather because he carries a Chinese knife, not being nervous about how your knife is going to be used.

When my brother does bother carry to a knife it's always a maxam or some other cheap thing he can beat the crap out of and then throw away. I have been trying to get him to buy a decent knife but he still doesn't see the point when his knife only cost 5 bucks. The funny part about this is that he does have one of the older buck nighthawk models that he loves but it's to big to carry as an EDC. I try to tell him that of course my knife cost more but in the long run it's the better value.
Oh and my Grandfather was not mad he understood completely.
