As the title implies, I'm being a moron and just can't figure out why my friction folder blade is binding (blade will be smooth for the first 1/4 of opening then the pivot starts rotating and tightening.)

I do believe the holes in the handle are straight and the holes in the blade were waterjet spotted and then reamed 0.05".

I am using a hidden stop pin which I have never done before. Usually my folders will have some sort of bind but will work out after I polish everything up or straighten a hole but this one is giving me quite the headache.

Any thoughts would be appreciated and any help is welcomed.

Thanks in advance!

You say this is the first time doing a hidden stop pin setup. Perhaps there's some friction between the pin and the slot? Is the pin clearing throughout its travel until it hits either end of the slot?

if the problem is the pivot screw tightening, you will solve it locking that screw in position.
Someone uses locktite specific compounds, someone else drills (perpendicular to the screw axis) trough the screw end and put a piece of fishing line inside the hole, then trim the excess....this way it acts likewise the locking nuts.
Do you use a lubricant on the washers?

Sounds to me that it could be the back end of the blade sides at the pivot are not parallel either front to back or up and down or both.

This was my exact first thought. Sounds like your blade or your scales or both aren't parallel all the way around.

Thanks, everyone for the insight. After eating dinner and pondering a bit, I realized you all must be right. So to fix it, do I drill through the hidden holes and do an external stop pin? That sounds like it would work.

Fixed it! Drilled the stop pin hole slightly larger, it was more of a press fit before. Since I gave it around 0.02-0.05 to play, everything is much smoother overall.

Thank for the help, yet again!!
