Worked a 60 hour workweek so far with another 8 or 9 coming up tomorrow and another 70 hour week next week - no break - followed by probably 3 more 10 hour days the following week, until I get to live like a normal person again.

But I keep going down to my shop, thinking I want to cut some steel...

That's just freakin nuts. :D

Sorry folks, I thought I put this in Around the Grinder. If a mod sees this and wants to move it, I'd sure appreciate it!

Ya, and I read where those dumb tribes of uncivilized primitives in whats left of the Amazon work 12 hrs a week on their survival. I know sometimes you got to do what you got to do but remember "Work to live, not, Live to work" Jim

Oh thats why I changed my work to a part time job. I can live with the half wage but I spend less and I can work on my knives. I was working 10 hours in average for 3 years. It is consuming. I cannot believe the life of the ER doctors, they mostly dont live but only work and sleep...

:D Thanks guys, that's all good advice. Fortunately we only have to go through this for a couple of weeks each year. But I still wanna make something! In desperation, I put a new switch in a lamp for my wife; that helped a little. ;)

I used to work in maintenance in a steel mill. Every year we had a two week maintenance shut down around the 4th of July. We covered the mill with 4 rotating crews. Just before shut down every year, it gets real busy with trying to get everything lined up for the shut down, plus doing the regular everyday maintenance.

In June of 1988, two of the four mechanics were off. One injured in a car accident and the other sick and in the hospital (both healed up well). Myself and the other guy worked 16 on and 8 off, trying to get everything ready, while still maintaining the mill. After three weeks of this in June getting ready and two weeks of it during shut down, I was completely exhausted and burnt out. So, I know where you're coming from. The paychecks were great, but it wasn't really worth it.

The whole point is, sleep when you get a chance. The shop will wait!

As an old shutdown hand told me once as we left a plant after 16 hours and had to be back in 7 1/2" "Sleep Fast"

"Sleep fast" is right! :D For most of my life I got by on 4 or 5 hours of sleep. Then a few years ago I decided I was going to get a full 8 hours - so my bedtime is 8:00 pm. My wife has a field day with that! I'm still getting a pretty good night's sleep now, I just don't have time for much of anything else. Well, just 10 more 10-hour days (that'll be 17 days without a day off; I'm too old for that!) and I'll be ready for a week (or two weeks) of vacation - sleeping in, workin in the shop and catching up on my honey-do list. And getting the leaves up... Cripes, that's no vacation! :D Maybe I'll just sleep till I go to the shop, then get a shower and go to bed until I go to the shop the next time. Yeah, that's the ticket! I'll just do that for a couple weeks, and make some freakin knives. But right now it's almost bedtime.
