When I look at the retail prices of many US manufacturers I find it hard to swallow that knives cannot be offered at a competitive price unless manufactured overseas.

That's the key word. Competitive. When you factor in all of the cost increases involved with US manufacture, it's hard for me to imagine how any US manufacturer could offer prices that compete with overseas manufactured product.
 
A $50 knife would probably be close to $100 knife made here. I'm totally fine with Japan made products. It's not on me that the federal government decided to regulate the hell out of American company's pushing production overseas.
 
I wish they'd make more of their knives in Japan, and I actually preferred the old AUS8 steel to the VG10.
 
Since CS went to Taiwan production with the exception of one 01TM, everything I've bought from
CS has been MIJ San Mai.
