I'm done with folders.....Multitools are the way to go.

I've been interested with knives for a few years now. I mainly focused on traditional slipjoints or modern folders, while multitools always took a back seat with me. It's not that I didn't like them, I guess I viewed them as work horses and only needed 1 or 2 to get most jobs done. But now I "saw the light". Basically, all I need is a decent multitool to be covered for all my mundane cutting tasks and whatever else pops up that needs fixing.

So, I ordered a Leatherman Wave+pocket clip. It's my second one since I got rid of my first one(like a dumb ass :foot:). I plan to only EDC that from now on and quit carrying folders. Of course I say this now, but give me a few weeks and I'll be buying a new Spyderco to carry lol. We'll see how it goes...

Has anyone else chose to permanently EDC a multitool rather than a folder?

I would have ponied up a little more cash for the ti-version. I want one, but suffice to say I don't need another. I would carry a folder anyway. I do. It's fun to loan out, or use it on task where you desire a more comfortable handle. Something that feels more secure and substantial than the blade on a wave. But that's just me. The wave is a fine tool.

I love having a good multi tool near by but can not pocket carry that thing. I leave one in my truck and one in my night stand.

I will be getting The leatherman OHT when it comes out and might belt carry it at work.

I'm thinking about carrying my Bucktool again. I don't really have a use for pliers but it's decently light and would carry in its pouch on a belt no problem. I think I'll carry it this week and see how I like it.

I carry a juice in my 5th pocket and a para 2 in the main, but I have gone solely MT in the past. The only reason I don't still is because of how much I simply love knives.

Love my Multitools but I will always have some type of Sypdie clipped to my front right pocket.

I carry a folder or slippie, and a multi or sak at all times. So I always have at least two on me. I just love all of them so why not? Here lately I've been carrying a spydie and my leatherman sideclip with a sak close by for scissors.

For EDC either have a leatherman or a SAK, but always have a dedicated knife on hand as well.

I've had that thought, and I've done some trials, but I haven't reached any conclusions yet. I have owned a Leatherman PST II for a long time, and also a similar Gerber. I used them when I thought I might surely need the tool aspect, and I've also carried them for travel when the knife laws at my destination might prohibit one of my good folders.

I've never had much interest in Multitools beyond that, until recently. I had the idea that maybe I could carry a MT instead of a folder and I've bought a Leatherman Skeletool and a Leatherman Charge. I've carried the Skeletool for a couple of weeks instead of my Benchmade mini-grip. The Skeletool is much more convenient for my use than the PST, firstly because of the pocket clip and secondly because of the one hand opening. This is what lead me to consider a MT instead of a folder. I had the same thought WRT the Charge, and it has even more tools in it. My Charge didn't come with a pocket clip so I have to chase down one of those before I can try carrying it.

So far I still have a tendency to miss my good folders even while carrying the new MT. And the other thing pulling on my is that I haven't bought any new knives in a number of years, and I have a desire to buy a couple of new knives to use for EDC. And if I'm going to buy new knives for EDC then that would push the MT's back out. Considering that I might like to carry a MT and a good folder, I've also bought a new Leatherman Juice to carry at the same time as a folder. I've tried doing that with the PST II but it is just a bit too long to sit in the bottom of my pants pockets. The Juice is a bit shorter and more rounded so it works a little better that way.

This photo shows my latest multitools as well as my Benchmade mini-grip that has been my recent EDC.

While I have considered carrying a Multitool only and have at least once. I`ve been carrying a knife since I was young which was some time ago. I just cant seem to leave it out of my pocket. I guess its just habit. The Leatherman skeletool CX and TTi are two MT`s that I`d consider for MT only carry. Because of better blade steel.

Well I finally decided that I prefer a dedicated pair of pliers along with a sak to a pliers based multi-tool. I also carry a medium to large folder. These days it's either a Delica or Endura , just depends where I'm going. I like knives and I like options so just carrying one doesn't appeal to me. My 2 cents.

For EDC purposes, I rarely carry a folder only. I always carry a SAK and sometimes add a folder to it, that's what works for me. For camping I add a fixed blade knife instead of a folder.

Im never without my leatherman super tool 300 and at least one folder.
The knife blades on the leathermans are not heavy duty enough, dont get me wrong i think they are great little blades but it easier to get at my folders than it is my leatherman and my folders have sturdiers blades.
Also i believe you should use a tool for its inteded purpose.
While i have seen people take down a tree with a 3" fixed blade i prefer an axe or saw.

these are my edc for the past 7 years no joke. i find use the blades on the multitool to be kind of a pain thats why i carry the trapper, the trapper also has sentimental value as well they never leave my side.

I keep going around on this subject. In my case, it's a changing lifestyle issue. As years go by, my activities and interests have been in the process of changing. There used to be times when a dedicated knife was the better choice. Once, when cutting open bales of blown insulation for five hours with only one short break, I sure was glad to have had my Buck 110 on hand that day. But that was 2 1/2 years ago, and even then, a seldom occurrence.

On the other hand, I still do a lot of minor home and away tinkering for which a multi-tool is much handier. It has been a long time since I have actually had need of a blade that couldn't have been filled by a multi-tool, and I expect that will continue. It has been a long time since I have picked up one of my dedicated knives (excluding kitchen) for any other purpose than fondling it.

For the most part, I am a minimalist who doesn't like to own more than necessary, but so far I have resisted the urge to sell, trade or give away my folders. Thing go in cycles, minds and circumstances can change, so I'll continue to keep my options open.

What can the knife blade on a folder do that a blade on a sak or leatherman can't?

Exactly that's why i usually carry a Multitool with either a SAK, or a Peanut. Just because sometimes dealing with the blade on a multitool and be too annoying so with a peanut or Sak you get better control.
