That's it. Over 100 knives, and I've noticed a trend..... I got sucked in to the knife snobbery BS crapfest, and forgot why I love knives: using them!

I will no longer turn up my nose at a knife solely on the brand.

I will by a knife that I want simply because I like it, not because everyone says it's the best knife in the world.

I will thin my herd to weed out all the knives I bought and could care less about.

If I buy a knife, I will USE it.

I will not get sucked in to the 'needs to be _______ steel or it won't work'.

I will modify, strip, or otherwise alter any of my knives, and stop thinking of them as museum pieces.

Ther, I got it off my chest. Now, off to cut something!

You're in too deep. You think you can get out? There is no hope for you anymore. You lost the will a long time ago.

gratz :)

I feel sad when I see people who have good gear but that gear never gets used , just seems a waste .

True, but I, like a suspect many here, have simply too many knives to properly EDC.
I am seriously thinking to reduce my collection from around 160 to around 25 knives (not necessarily the most expensive ones). Of course, the fact that I am about to buy a house plays a role as well !

Hey--a serious round of applause for you, my friend! It takes a lot to break through that barrier. When we first start getting seriously into knives it's easy--and I think maybe even a little necessary--to get caught up in the latest steels, handle materials, lock designs, etc. etc. After you've been at it long enough, though, you start realizing that while the pursuit of the latest and greatest is something to be respected and encouraged (it drives the industry forward after all!) every knife has its place. Yes--even the crappy little made-in-god-knows-where dime store ones. Should a mechanic be using one of those, or a Sebenza (or other similarly high-end knife) to scrape gaskets? Because you know he's going to do it, regardless of the kind of knife in his pocket. :D

In the words of Jeff Randall "99% of the knife industry is BS". While I disagree a little with the accuracy of that figure (I'd say it's more around 75%) I very much agree with another piece of wisdom the man often mentions: You can get through just about any task with just a $6 machete and a $15 multi-bladed slipjoint. The rest of it is all about enjoyment. We usually don't buy all these knives because we NEED them--it's because we enjoy them, and we all have different ways of doing that. Some of us enjoy collecting them, others enjoy using them, and some of us like both! Others enjoy the history behind them, or the science/engineering/technical aspects. We all have one thing in common, though--we like knives. And that's a good thing to like. :)

Note that he didn't say he wouldn't get any more knives--just that he was going to get rid of ones he doesn't care about and make sure to use all of the ones he does get. That's an important distinction. :D:D:D

My friend, it rings true for may of us. Here is mine

I will stop spening money on beautiful, classic, but otherwise pretty unusable puukkos (for the lack of a guard which I never could get comfortable with) just because they are sleak and beautiful and excellent examples of simplicity of form and function.

Let me tell you, I have an account with a big auction site. I have been very successful thinning the herd down that route. I have 100% satisfaction (under a name different than my user name here) and I do so because I found that selling them off like that to folks that wanted them was satisfying. I took care in taking photographs and got a lot of satisfaction. And I sold many at the price I paid.

There is no cure, only treatment and I suggest finding a good outlet for selling your "excess" items...I bet you will enjoy it...I did.

I just went through the same thing. As soon as I got my First Busse I realized this. Now I have may 2 camp knives and 3 edc knives. I feel more comfortable not. Im sure the collection will build up again but like you said its going to be what I like. If I want a Strider PT Ill buy it or if I want an old beat up case I found ata flea market I'll use it!

Amen brother!! I've been fighting this demon most of my adult life. I currently own ten knives and will likely pick up another two or three by the end of the year and then maybe start picking up a few slip joints and maybe a good axe or two. Oh ya I'm gonna have to have the BK 4 and I still need that golok I've been looking at....I think I need to call my sponsor :):):)

I now have about a dozen knives, all users, none more than $150. When I want to try something different, I like swaps and trades because I don't accumulate too many extras and it is more fun (and cheaper) than buying.

That said, now and then I see something I must have. If I end up not using it, it gets traded.

Congratulations.

As with anything that drives our interests in life, I believe there comes a time to step outside and look at what and why we are doing it.

Seeing and Knowing what our true Needs and Wants are and knowing the difference, is true enlightenment.

I've been thinking of thinning out my collection a little because I only seem to carry the same few most of the time.. I just don't want to get rid of something you can't get anymore.

Congratulations.

That pretty much sums it up for me.
