I'm Done with this BS!!!!!

I sold 6 knives last month to buy just one. Now if I wanna a knife I'll save for it and buy a decent thing, not just accumulate.
And yeah, I use them, that's the funny stuff!

I did this very thing about 1 year ago and it's really a relief to pick up my folder bag and find it so light.

What time are meetings? :p

Congratulations.

Personally, I had the good fortune of buying two knives early on in my addiction that I hated. The Ontario RAT 1 and Spydie UKPK are VERY popular and very good knives, but I just didn't like them.

This made me slow down and consider what I was doing. I realized A.) my tastes are quite different than the norm so I shouldn't get sucked into buying the latest darling of the forums, B.) I don't want or need a bunch of knives I'll never use, and C.) I don't need to spend a lot to be content.

Consider me a member of that club as well, brother.

There is better & different. Designs & materials vary. It really is a very unique hobby! My parameters are "in-house" made knives, usually USA owned & made knives. I've tried and flipped probably 100 knives between various forums, evilbay & w/ friends. I use EVERY knife that passes through my hands for a min of a month or two. Ergos, blade characteristics , use versatility, materials, construction methods & fit and finish among others factor in to what cycles in or out. I like to have a quality Fixed blade, a quality large-ish folder & a smaller folder. Currently the Nyala is the bee's knees. Competing for winter EDC, as I'll likely flip 2-3 of 'em, are a Lg. Seb 21, Sm. Seb 21, SnG CC, Spydie Military, Paramilitary 2, & a BM Mini Grip with a busted omega spring. I almost look at them as having a knife bank account. They have "X-ish" value. If I average $50 a month in losses of "flipping" to enjoy & use what I appreciate I'm OK with it. It seems expensive, but compared to many hobbies or recreations, it's completely normal.

You're in too deep. You think you can get out? There is no hope for you anymore. You lost the will a long time ago.
NEVER!!
You can checkout any time you like,
But you can never leave!
GREAT quote! I love this one! Got to love them Eagles!

50 bucks says you attain at least 10 knives in the next 12 months :D
Nah...... well, maybe 8.
I want to help! Send me all the knives you want to get rid of! :-)
Watch the trade listings. I suspect a large list posting soon. BTW, I've gifted a few already. THAT it a good feeling!
Consider me a member of that club as well, brother.

I'm in, as long as we don't have to pray for help to a door knob.... literally.

That's it. Over 100 knives, and I've noticed a trend..... I got sucked in to the knife snobbery BS crapfest, and forgot why I love knives: using them!

I will no longer turn up my nose at a knife solely on the brand.

I will by a knife that I want simply because I like it, not because everyone says it's the best knife in the world.

I will thin my herd to weed out all the knives I bought and could care less about.

If I buy a knife, I will USE it.

I will not get sucked in to the 'needs to be _______ steel or it won't work'.

I will modify, strip, or otherwise alter any of my knives, and stop thinking of them as museum pieces.

Ther, I got it off my chest. Now, off to cut something!

Good for you ! I went thru more or less, the same thing a couple of years ago. I got rid of over half of my collecton whether by sale or gift , then I did the same thing about a year later and now I'm ready to to do it again.
When I'm done I will have about 1/5 of what I used to have and I do not miss a single one I sold.

I had a real epiphany a while back. I took my fiance to look at some tattoo designs and an old buddy of mine works at the shop. He asked me to work on his old
trusty Benchmade. It was his only pocket knife and he got by just fine. It was well used with much of the black coating worn off the blade. The whole
experience made me realize that I really do not need this ridiculous excess and that I will not get sucked into the trap of buying knife after knife after knife , just
to have them.
I also never bought into any 'super steel' kool-aid , never felt the need ,want or desire for Sebenza or a Strider. Never felt the need for those fancy sharpening
systems.

It is very liberating :) I have a lot of other hobbies , likes , loves etc.. knives is just one of them.

In the words of Jeff Randall "99% of the knife industry is BS". While I disagree a little with the accuracy of that figure (I'd say it's more around 75%) I very much agree with another piece of wisdom the man often mentions: You can get through just about any task with just a $6 machete and a $15 multi-bladed slipjoint.

Probably the truest words ever said here!

I did my giant downsize some years ago. I sold off all my custom fixed blades, all my production fixed blades except two, and kept only a handful of pocket knives. Everything else went. Did the same for my gun collection as well. It was so liberating, it was giddy. Felt like a ball and chain was cut off from me. At one time I had over a hundred knives, now only about a dozen. And I'm happy about it.

It's okay to like something, and collect some specimens of them. But don't let it get out of hand, and don't loose sight of reality. Don't get sucked into the mentality of having to have it because somebody you don't even know on a forum brags about what a great knife it is. The knife industry is an artificially created market that has nothing to do with reality, just getting your money into their hands. How many knives do you really need?

Carl.

I'm going to play devil's advocate here and say there's nothing wrong with a flourishing collection as long as you're adding to it at a pace you can afford. I think the majority of the population here on BladeForums, myself included, has many more knives than are practical. As with any collection, you're bound to have several sub-categories and classes; I'm sure you already have a few users, a couple you EDC, a few bush-knives, blades for hunting, kitchen fare, etc. as well as a few safe queens and 'art' knives. Before you do something rash and get rid of all those knives you've invested a lot of time and money in, consider what it is to be a collector and think on how you feel about taking on that role... ("Search your feelings, Luke...") because it will be far more expensive buying that collection back someday down the road. A collector can be a user too, after all!

This is just as true as everything else. I'd say that it's about making sure that you control what you buy--not having what you buy control you. If you want to be a collector, be a collector. If you want to buy customs, buy customs. Do whatever you please--but be sure that you do so consciously and in harmony with goals that you yourself have set and not ones imposed on you by others or by the industry. :)

I just don't buy anything i would'nt use. All of my blades have scrapes/scuffs/scratches/coating chips/wear marks on them ---with the exception of one & that too will change soon i expect. I don't make enough money to collect knives as art & my wife is probably thankfull for that ! LOL

I just realized I was getting sucked in too. I already went through it with guns and fishing tackle. I only have about 15 knives (not counting kitchen hardware) but realistically this should last me the rest of my life. That's it I'm swearin off knives for good.

See yall at the knife show :D

I said the same thing after I went on a knife buying spree on the first month, and looked at the knives I have realizing it's BS!!! So I shrunk my "collection" down to the ones I absolutely can never see myself selling, and I decided to use all of them no matter how rare they are.

Glad you saw the light too.

In the past few months I reached pretty much the same point. I have got where I don't purchase a knife unless it's has a specific use that none of my other knives can do, or it's really interesting. And then there's vintage knives, now that's sometimes another story :D

I collect (~200 now I'd say) and I use, and I applaud you for realizing you weren't getting satisfaction from what you own. I collect diversity so that when I design I can have 20-30 knives on front of me, blending the features until I have the knife I want. That being said I have a large trade knife collection that I can pull from to get others, which can work for the new knife bug, but I have to weigh it vs what diversity I'm giving up.

P.s. You aren't selling a BRKT bird and Trout, Ontario/rat stockman or Crawford Persico by any chance??

If you likem, it's very easy to get sucked into the frenzy. I have to pat myself on the back when I was at Dicks Sporting Goods and one of my favorite open faced spinning reels was substantially on sale.... I already have a brand new spare... I resisted. That was over $100 I kept in my pocket.

I have expensive custom knives, but what do I actually use.... a Vic SAK. Even bought a Frost Cutlery slip joint last week to try out fully expecting not to like it. Then there is the brand spanking new Fallkniven F1 I just got over the weekend. Oh my.... There went that $100 and more "savings" from Dicks.

With knives and guns.... well, I'm not ready to divest myself just yet like Carl (Jackknife). But the time IS approaching when I will substantially thin the herd. My wife will be giddy.... finally, you're going to sell some of this stuff that you never shoot or have any intention of shooting. I keep telling her she just doesn't understand. :D

A knife is meant to be used — it's a tool, just like a hammer. Having said that, there are extremely expensive and collectable knives out there that I feel are not meant to be used primarily.
I have sold most of my knives and now I'm down to only 10 knives of varying kinds at around the 100-Dollar-price-range or so. The rest of my knives are just plain ol' Moras n' stuff like that. I use my knives, I don't really collect them.
