I think this is a great thread idea. I don't know why it didn't take off before.
For the money, my favorite axes were the Swedish made Husqvarna axes. Their boys axe seems to have sky rocketed in price, but back when it was closer to $55, what a steal. Same for their Carpenter's axe. I like their hatchet less so, because in my opinion, it's too heavy for the handle, and on my particular copy, I can't seem to get it that hair shaving edge I can on the Boy's axe and Carpenter's axe.
Short of that, I feel the Cold Steel's Hawks don't get enough credit. Decent steel and great choppers for the size and money.
Thirdly, Fiskars. For a no nonsense working axe that very quickly takes a hair shaving edge, for the money, these axes can't be beat. They lack the passion that wood and steel axes give me, but I adore these axes for different reasons.
