I notice this sometimes maybe when I'm trying to hog off metal fast? Is this from the belt not being tight enough? Here is an example of what is happening and I'm draw filing to fix it. Any ideas what id going on?

I'm thinking that your flat platen may not be so flat any more. Try taking it off, and put a straight edge over it to see if it is dished in the middle.

That's what is was lol. It's been a year since I got my 2x72. It's dished in two spots.
Thanks Shane

Could always throw a sheet of sandpaper down on a piece of granite and sand it flat. Maybe use a magnet on the back for leverage. Keeping the platen true is a lesson I learned a long time ago but have to relearn every few knives lol. Gunk from the back of belts can build up on the platen too and cause uneven grinds. In turn that causes ruined blades, burn belts, and wasted time.

When you're hogging off metal, you're using a lot of pressure. Maybe you're making the belt bunch up a little bit in front of the pressure. That would cause a small hollow grind.

I just took it off and it is really dished out toward the bottom. I don't think it can be saved so I flipped it for right now. Thanks.

That was what I was thinking. Now that I have seen my platen it could be both.

Now is the perfect time to order a glass platen.

It is a HUGE improvement.

Glad you got it figured out

I agree with Adam that you could put a glass platen over it now. It's on my list to do as well.

Are the mounting holes on your platen drilled all the way through? If so you might try flipping it over.

I'll second or third the glass platen, they work very well at keeping the platen flat and last a very, very long time.

Thanks for all the help guys! I'm going to order a glass platen and will probably weld a tab on the bottom of my old one for the stop.
