I'm getting fond of 154CM

Hello!

I managed to sharpen my trusty small Grip to a hair popping sharpness. Now I understand what you guys mean by that. And it seems my Emerson CQC7 is also sharp and has 154 as blade steel.

But unfortunately, I can't manage to make a Military S30V as sharp as my Benchmade. Probably I need to work harder at sharpening ;)

Funny, I just sharpened a mini Grip, S30v Millie among others just last night. That 154CM is surprisingly easy to sharpen for me now as compared to when I started out. It does come with experience and by that I literally mean just sharpening enough times. Wait till you get a hold of S90v or ZDP etc... They take so much longer, I take a few drinks just to get me going beforehand. Gotta get in a groove with those. Again, once I had my sharpening rig figured out, 154CM has become ridiculously easy to sharpen and reprofile.

I find 154CM to be very user friendly. I own 2 Benchmades, ZT0200, and Emerson CQC-15 - all 4 with 154CM. I would even go so far as to say that its's fun/ therapeutic to sharpen them.

154CM is easy to sharpen until you decide to regrind with a bench stone. :D

A bit on an exercise in patience.

I started a thread not long ago about favorite steels and 154CM was brought up more than any

I got an S90V Millie, I haven't had to sharpen it yet. Hoping it doesn't need it until next Christmas, where my Christmas list will have only one item on it, a wicked edge pro sharpening system.

Love 154cm gets sharp really quick on my stones, and when I'm being really rough with it and striking things or hacking through things it tends to just fold at the edge a little instead of chipping. This to me is really nice for when I go and sharpen it again, as I'm not having to work out chips in the blade.

I find that it's very difficult to put a "scary" edge on a S30V blade, and at the very least takes far longer to do.

154cm is fantastic in my experience. All the Emersons I've handled have been extremely sharp out of the box. My 950 Rift came hair popping sharp and stayed that way for quite awhile. That and VG10 are two of my favorite steels.

154CM is one of my favorites too. It offers all the qualities I need in a blade steel. And I agree, it seems to take forever to sharpen my S30V blades but I can get them scary sharp like no other steel I own. Could just be me but S30V seems to get brittle when it's that sharp.

+1 on the "theraputic" aspect of sharpening a friendly steel like 154CM (& also ATS-34). I think sometimes the "super steel" hoopla gets a bit overblown. Even if one of my blades is plenty sharp, sometimes I'll "just touch 'em up" for fun and relaxation.

Excellent steel, though I had a heck of a time reprofiling my Grippie, and finally switched to a Cabella's Grippie in D2, which I found much easier to hone. CPM154 is easier to sharpen than CM154 -- love my BassPro 110 in that steel.

The s90v on my South Fork sharpens relatively nice with mold masters.

I always was fond of 154. My Kreined CQC-11 is so sharp I stopped carrying it because I think it was making my hair fall out from fear.

154CM is good stuff, theres a reason its been around awhile and used often. I find that while some steels are easier to sharpen than others, the end result is the same. I use a sharpmaker and I get 154cm as sharp as my s30v and s30v as sharp as s90v and so on, the sharpmaker makes it easy for me as im not so good with conventional stones. I dont know what you use but the more you use it the better you will get and the sharper your knives will be, once you get to a point that you think may be your peak theres always the next level.

Yes it's very nice but for me the CPM is better. The S30v requires a diamond stone and lots of care. But of course S35VN is the best of all !!

I also think s30v gets brittle when you get it scary sharp, even convexed I find it more likely to chip something fierce if I make it too sharp. I try to avoid s30v and the knives I do have with Ionly put a functioning edge on them except for the military. The military can hold a finer edge than other s30v blades I've found, but even than its still prone to chip. CPM 154 ftw

What bevel angle do you have it at and how do you sharpen?
