I'm getting kicked off campus for having a letter opener.

I think the guys in Knife Laws will be helpful.

Glad that I got my schooling out of the way when things weren't so bad. Carried a knife all day from before first grade on, some fairly huge. Never had the slightest problem at school. Lived in a dorm for four years (University of Arkansas) and even kept guns in the room much of the time (the guns were against policy, but the knives weren't, but I would have been surprised if anything would have happened had I been caught with the guns).

Even saw guys cleaning squirrels in the dorm, and one guy did it with a deer in one of the bathrooms and left the guts laying in the shower (he did it in there so that he could hose the carcass out well). The cleaning lady went into screaming hysterics the next day when she saw this, believing it to be a very grisly murder scene (Troll Bait is not making this up, folks.)

Hope you get this issue with the wooden knife cleared up. This is fairly unbelievable to me.

It's ridiculous, and your r.a. is a dick.

I'm hoping it works out in the end. Is there a Student Ombudsman (sp?) and can he be of assistance, or does he only represent students in academic disputes?

This is unbelievable! Seriously, until I saw the actual papers I thought this was just a joke.

Get a lawyer and start thinking about getting a place off campus if you can afford it.

Be polite, specially when it comes to dealing with the police, but be relentless. You're right here, so don't let them trample on your rights.

Best thing to do is to ask questions - lots of them.

Often there are "mitigating circumstances" that are not always on the surface. Dig a little deeper.

Also, remember: declare yourself innocent, but be apologetic for causing a stir.

Kill 'em with kindness. Works for me.

I would sue the campus. Make them pay. A knife is not automatically a weapon. Make them PAY!!!

I went to the housing authority and according to the student handbook, letter openers are in the same category as wooden baseball bats, weapons according to the handbook.

I mentioned that theroom had passed inspection witht the letter opener in plain site on the desk in my room twice before.

I asked if the letter opener was in the drawer with the kitchen knives, would the RA have still written me up?

I asked for resolution before the end of the day or I would be contacting Fox news, etc, etc, etc.

I also told them that I was advised that before I can sue I have to incur damages, so I have made arrangements to move out hastily and miss classes for the next week.

Good for you. I'm pretty sure you can score in a settlement ~100k or so. Make sure you get them for defamation as well as mental distress.

Get a good trial lawyer and see the $$$ rolling in.

Hey Guys...

Sounds like Dorm life blows!!

I think you should round up a few chicks and get the hell out of there.
Go live somewhere where the Nazi's won't bother you,,and tell the school to stick the dorm up their Arse...

That's Crazy dude!

Chicks and Keggers sound like a whole lot more fun!

ttyle

Eric...

I'm a little (alot) extreme so forgive me, 1st tell them to pound sand, and move the hell out of there.
Show these scary letters to an attorney and have them send a letter to your school that you are sueing for emotional damages and legal costs. They were obviously acting unreasonable to show you who was in charge and waste a bunch of your time with menial crap-so return the favor. You are an adult for crying out loud, and yes they may have rules, but the knives in the draw accessible to everyone puts a legal squash on the whole thing. They will ask you back, but probably ask you to also send your letter opener home. What a crock of crap that should be reserved for unresponsible children-not college students.
Chicks and kegs are more fun.
Better yet, join the military and see the world for awhile before continuing your book education, you'll have more worldly experience and mental ammo later to debate the liberal candy-ass professors into a corner when they try to brainwash you with their ideological BS they learned from their mentors that have helped to load our world with ridiculous laws and rules in the 1st place.

A wooden blade eh? In the defense of the administration I must note that all the vampires on campus can feel much safer now, good thing you were wise enough to conceal your box of toothpicks and your stash of sharpened no.2 pencils. Seriously though, good luck to you with the whole ordeal. I wouldn't sweat too much though especially since the real authorities have yet to see the "weapon" for themselves as it's not like some sheeple RA's on a power trip have all that much power. Isn't bureacracy wonderful though.

Dude! This is just the type thing that gets turned around on you fast. You need legal help. This hole country is going to hell with a bunch of wimps driving the damn bus! You HAVE the right to have a damn opener, BUT, they have more time and money. If they want you gone bad enough you're gone. It's not right but it is what happens when our rights are removed from us. Concealed weapons are not killers. The people that misuse them are. Chief

Lemme get this right in my head (and forgive I may blow an "F" word or two) a baseball bat is a weapon, but, not a fucking 10inch cleaver?? So I'm supposing that if it fits in as a "tool" you can keep it? like maybe a box cutter? or mayhaps a machete? or we can go leather-face and keep a chainsaw???

GOOD GOD!!! what is wrong with our home land today??

I have only three things to say sue;sue;sue!!!! schools are becoming the land of the brainless!

Sounds like you have no defense then. You wanted to go to their school, live on their campus, and by doings so agreed to abide by their rules. You usually have to sign something saying that you've read and agree to the terms set forth by the student handbook and unless you didn't or they don't have that paperwork, you can't really do anything. That sucks. :barf:

I would have to agree with Laceration. As stupid and as wrong as this whole thing is, IF you signed anything saying that you agreed to their rules and terms then you are pretty much fubar.

The AKTI most likely will not do anything on your behalf, other than maybe refer you to a knife friendly lawyer. The handbook states that the college considers letter openers to be weapons. You had a letter opener, therefore you had a weapon. Their lawyers will eat you for lunch.

I am in no way saying that they are right in thier opinion, and the situation totally sucks, but I think you are stuck with it.

If nothing else, you have an excuse to leave to dorms. The situation is absurd, but that's the norm given the kind of people who run most colleges. I'm glad I always lived off campus.

I believe R.W. and Laceration are correct. A stupid as the rule is they probably have you.

I am amazed at how unapologetic everyone is being about this.

The "knife" was returned to me this morning with some paperwork quashing the eviction notice.

NO apology.

My dad told me to take the letter opener and my kitchen utensils home as well as any other questionable items but I'm not going to.

-also to several of you that were asking, it's the University of Mass, Dartmouth.

thanks for the support everybody.

Well, you lucked out. As to the apology, they have nothing to give an apology for. The rules are in the handbook, you broke those rules.

I would take a second and think about growing up a bit. You are playing by their rules and on their turf. By continuing to keep the letter opener in your dorm you are inviting trouble. Wise up and listen to your father before you get into real trouble.
