I'm posting this here since I don't see an Intro section on these forums (which I think they should have)...

I just bought my second knife.. I've done a lot of research on steels and read/watched a lot of knife reviews and I think I've caught some sort of knife fever. I just got my Spyderco Persistence EDC knife in the mail today and I've been flipping it and cutting sh!t all day long! I've even been cutting things that don't need a knife's assistance. Just to have an excuse to use it lol!

Anyways, My first knife I bought about 6 months ago in an antique shop. It's a Japanese hunting/bowie knife from the 1960's or 1970's.. I've used it for camping and fishing and it's worked great, but after a recent fishing trip I forgot to wash it and it's developed some rust. I'm new to the whole knife thing so I'm not really sure how to restore it. Anyways, I decided to start my knife collection and picked up an EDC first just to get something useful.

I'll post some pictures of my Japanese knife later on, maybe someone can tell me more about it. I'm pretty excited to start my new collection and glad I found this board, seems to have a lot of useful information.

My girlfriend is not too happy about my new found hobby-- she says I should be looking at engagement rings, not knives! haha!

Just tell your GF that now you have something else in common to help you bond further: you're both interested in expensive and well-crafted pieces of metal. Yours just happen to come with a handle and they cut things. Hers comes with a diamond in it.

Welcome to the obsesion, it only gets worse (or better according to how you look at it). You could always show her pictures of some custom knives along with the prices so you can show her how frugal you are

Here are a couple of pictures of the old knife I bought.. I got it at an antique shop while on vacation up in the mountains.. We stayed in a log cabin near Helen, GA..
Anyways, I just saw it and though it was really cool.. Had a great feeling in my hand and I couldn't resist. The guy wanted $20, ended up getting it for $10 together with the leather sheath. He told me that the sheath wasn't the original, but he got it with the knife. The owner said it was likely brought to the US by an American soldier right after WWII. I'm very interested to find out more about it's history.

I used it for camping and fishing for a while without a problem since I would wash it off after every trip, but after a recent sea fishing trip, I forgot it in my tackle box and it developed some rust (doh!).. Hopefully I can restore it somewhat.
