I'm going to have to buy a Randall

Same here ... would appreciate it if one of the forum administrators could get the owner's to debug this occasional phenomenon... I often just skip the thread when it goes too far "right", no politics implied.

More often than not, when I inquire about Randalls at a knife shop, the guy says "I have a couple but they're not for sale".

I am keeping my eye open for a Randall, not sure which one, probably a #1.

A knife is by default a tool, it's only a weapon when a human chooses to make it so.

I always thought Randalls were the best. I had a collection of roughly 22 of them at one time. I loved looking and playing with them... then one day............

I decided to take my Model 23 hunting Randall, Hunting! Wow... I hope that it was just one bad blade, but when I used it to split open the brisket/checst cavity on a deer, the blade got a noticable wave in it about 1/2" from the hilt. I was quite let down. I took it with me on a trip to Orlando the next February and took it to their shop to show them. They reground it as I waited and were real friendly about it. I was impressed. They said it must have just been ground a bit thin.

Well, the next year, same thing..... one small antelope and the wave was back. I sent it in, got it reground again and sold it, as well as the other 21.

Now I stick to Benchmade and even have a real good Schrade fixed blade that has been used on over 50 big game animals with no sign of wear other than a few sharpening marks here and there....

Just my experiences on Randall. They are really nice to look at though.

Jon,

What's a wave? Sounds like you may have chiped the edge.

Is that what happened?

I own sevaral Randalls and I have used and encountered quite a few that have been heavily used. They seem solid enough. But, if you are trying to chop throuh a brisket you are better off with an axe.

As for the leather handle; I have a distinct preferance for black micarta. But, my choice is largely for aesthetics. Leather handles make excellent field knives. Just look at how many WWII and Vietnam vintage Ka-bars are still in use today. Most of those leather handles have held up better then the blades.

When I said "wave" I meant the blade shape got a ripple in it, not chips or anything. If you looked down on the edge of the blade, it waved or tippled.... it was quite disappointing to say the least. I do not "chop" through the brisket. There is a very easy to cut piece of muscle or grissle that holds the rib cage together. No bone cutting, just a tough flesh. I have done it literally over 100 times with other brands, one of my favorites and $40 Schrade has been used too many times for an actual count, but LOTs is very fair to say. I even have used that knife on 5 deer in one trip with no need to sharpen it until after all 5!! Not bad for a cheap knife.

Anyway, the Randalls are nice and do have a great reputation, I just would not use one again. On another note, I gave my Dad a #5 Randall and he has to sharpen it each time he wants to gut just one deer, that is not too hot compared to a $30-40 knife. My brother also got a 23 and is not impressed, in fact he went back to his Vanguard BUCK! Ouch huh?

Oh well.... I am sure we just got a bad batch maybe, as these 3 were all bought at the same time when I was in orlanda one year. By the way, all 3 were Stag handled and very nice knifes.
